At the doctor today...(LONG)
I just came from the doctor's office and I am not terribly chipper. In fact, I am in a quiet/mild state of hysteria. The doctor (the one I usually do NOT see) decided NOT to dilate my cervix. He had a valid reason. He says that the procedure involved with dilating a cervix does leave cramping and irritation. To do a dilation and an insemination at the same time would be counter-productive. In other words, the irritation would not allow the insemination to be effective. So I get it. It makes sense and I certainly would not want to cause any unnecessary trauma to my body right now. So he said he would do the insemination by itself.
I asked him why he would do an insemination when my cervix is clearly not open enough to receive a catheter. He said the catheter, as accurate as it is, is still hard in nature and wider than sperm on its own. The sperm stands a better chance of handling the curves and twists and turns of my body (for lack of better words) than a catheter does given my "opening issue." He told me that my cervix was not closed because I AM getting a period, but it was simply too small to get a cathter through. We did the insemination anyway even though it may not work, because there is always the chance that it will and we didnt want to waste a cycle.
So now what. What do I do? I told this doctor why I pushed for the HSG a month early in the first place never thinking for a minute I had a cervix issue. It was to be proactive to check my tubes in the event they were blocked. He told me to call the office on Friday regarding a dilation. My guess is that I will have to be dilated before (how long I dont know) before the next attempt at HSG which hopefully, will be next cycle.
I told him I had two appointments with REs already lined up. He told me I was being proactive and validated everything I said. He did not think I was obsessive at all. He nodded positively when I said that an IUI would more than likely be the next step for me, but that an RE would have to dilate me beforehand(whenever that is). I dont know enough about the physiology or biology of it all so I am guessing a lot. I am still having a hard time understanding everything, but as I calm down, I absorb things much easier.
I cried through the entire appointment. DH felt horrible but he was there for me. I feel lost and confused. I am not angry at the doctor I saw today, he was doing the right thing. I think perhaps the original doctor did not get the right information and requested a procedure prematurely. I will speak with HIM on Friday.
I opted to skip tonight's seder. I was in no mood to put on my happy face.

Re: At the doctor today...(LONG)
Im sorry you are having a hard time leslie.. but just think, spermies are wayyyyyy smaller than the tube they use and could most definitely get in there so to speak.
I am crossing my fingers for you.. and I bet that a RE will have the answers you need and want.

Thanks. I just feel worn out - I was ready to deal with the physical discomfort of a procedure tonight, but not the emotional part. Highs and lows man - they just blow!

I am so sorry you have to go through all of this. I think an RE will be able to give you a better more accurate perspective, its just what they do. A vasular surgeon knows more about manipulating the heart than a cardiologist does.
I know how scared and upset I was the first time the RE told me I should consider IVF, I never expected that! and I bawled all the way home.
Hang in there. I am glad you have consults lined up, I think it will be a very empowering experience for you.

You articulate exactly what DH said. REs are specialists. They know a bit more. I feel good and not hasty about making appointments and advocating for myself. Thanks!

Re: At the doctor today...(LONG)
An RE I think is your best bet, and I have to say as I told you previously My cerviux has a TON of scar tissue, severe closing and the IUI catheter was FINE in getting in there for me. ( they do a sono afterwards to make sure teh sperm are deposited in the right area, so you know it went through.)
I hope the same for you!
p.s I was also told by my OB that I would need to be dialated for IUIS and I never did and I had 13 iuis!
Have faith in moving forward.
And of course, hope you dont need it and this works this month!!

Re: At the doctor today...(LONG)
Leslie I'm soo sorry things didn't go as you had hoped tonight. I'm sorry the MD believed that dilation would be a counterproductive effort, but I do hope what he is saying is true and that you are not wasting your time with a regular GYN.
Try to hang in there. I'm here if you need me.

Re: At the doctor today...(LONG)
I think I have spent enough time with the regular OB/GYN up to this point, yet not too much. I dont feel misled or anything like that. I simply had higher hopes that things would work for me in a shorter period of time. I am ready to move to the next step.

Re: At the doctor today...(LONG)
As Donna said, I also have a lot of scar tissue on my cervix and didn't have to be dilated for IUI's. I did have some issues with them getting in, but only one or two really difficult ones.
The end result is going to be worth it, you just have to hang in there right now. Hopefully, you insemination works and you don't have to pursue this any further.

Oh that sounds so disappointing and frustrating.
but it also sounds like you're taking the right steps to get the answers you need (and to get that BFP).
And you have every right to do what you have to to take care of YOU right now.

Re: At the doctor today...(LONG)
Leslie, I am so sorry you are going through this.it really sukks......
My advice is, don't waste anymore time with a regular OBGYN, please go to an RE...I am not saying your doctor is not good but with issues like this it is best to be looked after an RE...
I am sure once your issues with the cervix are resolved which I hope will happen without any more unnecessary pain (physical & mental), you will get your BFP!!! I hope it will happen really soon....
I know this is probably the last thing you want to think of but would you consider IVF?? we all know IVF gives the best chances of pregnancy (% wise) and it bypasses any tubal & cervical issues you might have...it also saves time in a lot of cases....just something to think about...
xoxo

Re: At the doctor today...(LONG)
I agree with all of the posters above. I think your best bet is an RE.
I'm sorry that you went through this, but hopefully the IUI was successful. An RE will be able to better determine whether or not dialation is necessary for the IUIs, which of course, I hope not. But either way, you're going to get your BFP...I just hope you get to take the shorter road.
Good luck to you!
