astigmatism/glasses ... wwyd
DS is 2 and has astigmatism that requires him to wear eyeglasses. The doctor said we can wait another 5 months and see if it is better then he will not need glasses. However, if it is the same or worse, then time will be wasted and he may have learning delays. Anyone have experience with this? Wwyd?

astigmatism/glasses ... wwyd
My dd has the same thing when she was young. She need the glasses right away. They also had to patch her because that eye is weaker than the other one. Eventually her eye got better with the patch, but still needs to wear glasses.
If I were you I'd be concerned because you don't want him to get a lazy eye like my daughter. Luckily we caught the lazy eye before her eye turned in like a typical lazy eye. Good luck...they look so cute with glasses

Re: astigmatism/glasses ... wwyd
i had similar issues at 2 or 3 years old. My parents did get me glasses. I wore them pretty consistantly with good results until I was about 10 and then never needed them again. My vision to this day is perfect, no issues, no learning delays etc. In fact, I am the only person in my immediate family who does not need glasses

astigmatism/glasses ... wwyd
My son's eye dr recommended glasses at 21 months so we got them right away. He wears them all day every day with the hopes that he won't have to wear them forever. He doesn't seem to mind them at all and he looks adorable

Re: astigmatism/glasses ... wwyd
My DD has been wearing glasses since 26 months old for anisometropia (her eyes have 2 different prescriptions, one eye sees better then the other). Without the glasses she would be at risk for lazy eye. If your opthomologist is recommending glasses for astigmatism. I would get them. Isn't that when the lens of the eye is shaped differently? Did he say it can correct it self, is that why he said you can get them now or wait and see? How is his visual acuity?

astigmatism/glasses ... wwyd
DS has had glasses since April. His right eye is clear, but his left eye is nearsighted. I noticed a difference in his depth perception after he got them, as well as the frequency of him tripping while running.
Personally I wouldn't wait. While I feel that "learning delays" is a strong term, I'm sure not seeing properly might cause problems.
You said Dr, is this your pediatrician who did the exam or an opthomologist?

Re: astigmatism/glasses ... wwyd
Ive been wearing glasses since about the same age. I have astigmatism, near sided and different prescription in the two eyes. (loads of fun).
I hate glasses with a PASSION. But if AJ needed them Id do it early to just avoid it having to be a stronger script later.
So far at 4, AJ has been pretty good. I'm HOPING it stays that way. Though she LOOOOOOOOOOOOVES trying on the glasses when mama and daddy go in. yes, and I admit.. she looks adorable with them!

I'm surprised that your doctor said that you could "wait and see." Astigmatism is a result of a different curvature of the eye. That's not something that's likely to change in a few months.
I'd get the glasses. Why wait to fix a simple problem? Your child could go through a growth spurt and need new glasses in a few months anyway.

Re: astigmatism/glasses ... wwyd
We did see a ped opthamologist. He didn't recommend that we wait but if it was our decision to we have no one to blame if things get worse.
He said DS can have problems with fine detail such as coloring within the lines etc.
His numbers are borderline so I was thinking of getting a second opinion.

Re: astigmatism/glasses ... wwyd
I would def get a second opinion. My DD's eyes have different vision (one has a larger astigmatism than the other). the first dr said put her in glasses at 15 months. The next said to patch her weaker eye for 2 hours a day, which we've been doing for over a year. The final dr we've been seeing and who i really like said to keep patching and come back. We jsut went back this week and he said the difference between her two eyes isn't that bad and he would stop patching altogether. So we are doing that now. I'm still nervous and hope we are doing teh right thing, so I might go see a 5th (yes 5th!) eye dr just to make sure.....

learning delays?
oooh - you mean from those months of NOT wearing glasses - Ok I get it now.
I have been wearing glasses since 3 year old - (same reason)
If it were my child, I'd get him the glasses.

We have the same issue. DD is 4 and we just caught it. She has mild astigmatism in one eye and now wears glasses full time. The opthamologist said her eyes may get stronger in a few years from wearing the glasses and may not even need them later on.

Re: astigmatism/glasses ... wwyd
My DD started going to a pediatric ophthalmologist around 9 months I believe because she "failed" her eye test in the pediatricians office.
She has astigmatism is only one eye, we go in every 6 months. She doesn't wear glasses yet, because the doctor said at this age (she is not 20mos) their eyes are changing CONSTANTLY, but they do want to keep a careful eye on her to make sure she doesn't become more reliant on her "good" eye.
If we go in January (our next apt) and he recommends glasses, I'll get them for her. I'll be a little upset, because although toddlers in glasses are adorable...I was hoping we'd be able to wait until shes a little older, but what can I do?
