Asthma moms...
How did your Dr go about diagnosing your child...???
Long story short... DS has had a cough and a wheeze since the beginning of November...
It goes back and forth between croupy cough and a mucusy wet cough...
Recently he started with some very crackly breathing...
Dr. did mention possibility of asthma today...but didnt really go into disucssing it...
Just curious how you KNEW it was asthma?

they can't be officially diagnosed with asthma until they are over 2 years of age... before the age of two, episodes of wheezing are called Reactive Airway disease (RAD)

I knew because I have terrible asthma and my mommy instinct told me so. But, as soon as the winter came last year (when he was only 2 months old) he got a cold that he didn't get rid of until the winter ended. Then he has spouts of croup and a weezy cough from time to time. One day he was weezing like crazy and seemed to have a hard time breathin so I took him to the ER. The dr. (just as my ped. said) told me that they can't officially diagnose DS with asthma until he turns 2. Until then it will be called "bronchiol spasms" (not sure of the spelling). But, as soon as he gets a cold, within days he is having trouble breathing until I give him a nebulizer treatment.
I know the signs. I know how awful it is. I told the dr. I didn't care that he isn't 2 yet...I know he has asthma.

Whatever this is has been going on since the beginning of November...
It started as croup...then was a regular cough...then croup again...then a wet mucusy cough, and now its a wet cough with a crackling wheeze..
I keep taking him back to the Dr and since he is happy and fever free they really arent doing anything for it...
The weirdest thing is... at night...he lays flat ...and doesn't cough once... I would think night time would be the worst...
I could deal with the cough...and label it as a bad cold, BUT the wheeze is what bothers me.. He sounds like a staticy radio station..
He doesn't seem to have any distress when breathing...

Agreed although I think my Dr said they dont diagnose until 3.
I had childhood asthma which we think was due to both my parents being smokers. Whenever my DS gets sick it goes straight to his chest, wheezing, belly breathing etc nebulizer and steroid treatments necessary.
My Dr considers him asthmatic when it comes to things like swine flu (she calls him high risk) but over all she says he just displays asthmatic tendencies and we will see where he is when he is 3.

This is true of most cases. My son was diagnosed at 22 months by a pediatric pulmonologist. My ped sent us there because we couldn't get his asthmatic episodes under control.
Before that he was treated as if he had asthma, like the child of the poster I quoted. Lots of kids outgrow the episodes, which is why there is no rush to diagnose "officially."

mine isn't so much a wheezer as much as a constant cough
18 months, caught a cold...3 days later, very weak, no energy...woke up from a nap with a little belly that was pumping so hard like an alien was trying to break out. took him to ped...they threw him in ambulance, he was in distress...4 days on oxygen and steriods.
this kid had never been sick up until this point(the same week I weaned)
stayed on meds, they called it RADS.
3 months later, came back in full force. I watched a teacher's little boy, so he was bringing us home sept germs. At night, fever would come, weakness, constant cough and gasping. In sept, 4 ER visits...get him stable, more meds.
October 2 ER visits.
Referred to pulmonologist.
Diagnosed asthma at 2. I was told 3 hospitalizations=asthma, before that it's RADS.
When we are in an episode...no one sleeps for 5 days straight. He has nocturnal asthma...and febrile seizures. since the asthma causes the fever, the fever causes the seizure, we just stay up all night, stare at him, discuss his stomach movements and keep medicating him.
colds are his #1 trigger.
after that trees, dogs, crying.

My son was not given an official diagnosis...yet...but it's coming...I have asthma, my DH severe allergies. My son has been treated with an asthmatic protocol since he was 8 weeks old...

What was the first sign...???
When dd would get sick ,she would end up in the hospital because of her rapid breathing ,and her oxygen levels were really low ,and they had to use the nebulizer on her alot

exactly...when Jacob was 1 year old he was in the hospital because of severe congestion and wheezing. He has been on a nebulizer since but that is exactly what the ped said. They didnt diagnose him with asthma because they give that diagnosis till 2 years old. They said that he had Reactive Airway Disease.
