As a working mom...WWYD ?
I currently work for a large agency, pension, benefits, nice pay. But my job is terribly boring and not at all fulfilling or related to my accounting degree. But... I am home everyday by 3:30 and they are flexible with my hours.
I HATE that I am not who I set out to be professionally but wonder if this is something I should just accept. I also know if I find a job I will most likely not be getting home before 6. Which would mean seeing Julia for many less hours a day I'm not sure losing the afternoons with DD is worth it.
Having deep thoughts today .... Just wondering what you would do

How old are your kids? IMHO, I would keep the job and revisit when all my kids are in school. But, totally a personal decision here.

A year ago - I would have said I needed a career that I set out for professionally (which I do have)... But now, I would give anything to be home by 3:30 and flexible hours. I would give up this job in a heartbeat to spend an extra two hours a day with my dd. My job isn't who I am, but my family is.

As someone who gets home between 7/7:30pm....I wish I could get home at 3:30pm. It would give me more than 1 hour a day with DS and more time with DH as a family.
I however do understand the part about feeling un-filled. I might wait to re-visit looking for another position until your kids are in school as the PP said.

Re: As a working mom...WWYD ?
I work for a company and in a profession that is nowhere near what I went to college for and where my working career started. Things just started to turn in this direction. I have a modified work schedule, but commute to and from Manhattan. I leave my house at 630a and get home around 545p. I would kill to be home by 330. My daughter and husband are my career and this is just a job. If I were you, I would stay were I am for now.

Me three.
I would love to be home at 3:30. I am gone 12hrs a day on a good day M-Th and I work from home on Fri (DS is either in daycare, with my mom or with DH while I work).
ETA - I'm in an area related to what my degree is in but, it's more of a communications role than accounting/finance.
If I stayed in accounting, I'd be working longer hours and on weekends.

Re: As a working mom...WWYD ?
I could have written this myself. I have been thinking this myself a lot lately. But for right now I think I am going to deal with being bored and my flexible schedule for a little a while, so I can get in that quality time for DC. My DC is still very young.

Honestly-if you like shatyou do and love the work life balance, I would keep the job.
If you hated what you were doing, hated going to work every day and it was taking a toll on you outside of work, I would look elsewhere.
But 3:30-Such a a dream! It would take a lot for me to give that up.

I am in your exact shoes. I browse job openings to see what's out there but nothing comes close to what I have now (flexibilty, benefits, and part time hours). So, I stay. Bored out of my mind. I try to get some of my personal stuff out of the way so it frees up more time at home.

Re: As a working mom...WWYD ?
I know what it is like to work in accounting and not be fulfilled. But in this profession I think jobs getting home at 3:30 are very hard to come by. I would stick it out until they are a bit older and then decide if you should make a switch. It does get easier when they are older to get home a little bit later.
Good luck!

Re: As a working mom...WWYD ?
For 2 years i was commuting to NY from PA after we bought our house here. almost 2hours each way. Nevermind the expense, stress, mental fatigue..
then I had DS in oct 09 and the commute got longer b/c i was leaving earlier for daycare. I had a very good job in book publishing which is where i've been since I left college in 2001. I had good pay, good benefits and even better co-workers. I left in august b/c I couldnt deal with the stress and financial expense of commuting 2+ hr each way..getting home after 6 and having 1hr with DS during the weeknites.
I work 3 days a week now at a job that is so F*** boring and mind numbing and totally not challenging in anyway. Some days I second guess myself that i gave up a career, benefts, etc..and we are struggling financially b/c of my huge paycut. But u know what..im home 2 full days with DS, drive 5 min to work and 10min to daycare and I couldnt be happier!

Re: As a working mom...WWYD ?
If you weren't expecting another child, I would suggest looking for a new job that you loved. I feel like the accounting girls I know have the most flexible hours (minus quarter end and tax season). The big four firms have awesome benefits and perks. There also seems to be tons of part-time accounting jobs.
Since you are expecting, I'd stick to your current job, get the maternity leave/pay and try to find a new job once the second child is a little older. The kids are young only once.

Re: As a working mom...WWYD ?
You also have to take into account your time vested at the company and in essence your seniority. Your current company is more likely to be understanding if you need time off than a new company.
It's soooo hard being a FTWM because we are pulled in so many different directions.
