Artsy people-- advice needed for a painting DD will be doing

Going to have DD paint a picture to hang in her baby's sister's room. Will have it professionally matted & framed. She loves to paint and she's really excited about this...she'll love telling people how she painted it (totally stole this idea from a book Chat Icon )

Anyway, this is baby's bedding. The walls are a light blue. Going with a blue/green/white/dash of pink theme and some cute lovebird type decorations to fit with the birds on the bedding.

So, what should I have her paint? Something she totally designs (meaning it has no design, just let her go crazy with a paintbrush and colors that work with the room)? It would just be splashes of color all over the page.

Or should I try to do something with a tree-- maybe using her handprints for the leaves, then having her paint in the tree trunk, maybe a little grass or sky, etc...And maybe a little rainbow somewhere since DD loves rainbows?

Any other thoughts? I want to do this soon and I'm having a tough time deciding.

Good idea! She definitely is old enough to "get it", you know? But she's not even 3 yet, so obviously the painting is going to be a bit more "abstract" aka imperfect Chat Icon since she wouldn't be staying in lines (if there are lines on this) or having it be "perfect", you know? But that's why it will be wonderful, because it was done by her almost-3-year-old sister Chat Icon

if you shadow box frame it, this could work.

I would love the imperfect part, that's what makes it great!!!
Maybe she could include the whole family, like a mommy b'fly, daddy, big sis and little baby b'fly???

You could either trace outlines for her to color or let her design the whole thing, either way it will be adorable!!!

Try both ideas and frame the one you like best.

ETA - Maybe C is very talented but I know how my DD is with paints, and there is no way she would or could paint a butterfly or paint-by-the-numbers. She usually just mushes all the colors together and we get a piece of paper with a grey mess all over it.... Good luck!

DD just did something at school and they are printing them on magnets and garden flags.

It's a butterfly made of her hand prints!! Really cute.

The hands were the wings. I will take a picture for you at home and post it.

Anthony made a caterpillar with his hand prints.

I would just pick the colors that match the bedding so everything matches and let her go abstract.

ITA. The color choice will be what make it go into the room.

Then she can draw flowers, butterflies or an abstract.

first..I LOVE THIS IDEA! So special!

second...I LOVE THE BEDDING!!!!

Last..I think she should pick the colors, based on your recommendationChat Icon , but she should just paint whatever she feels...love the butterfly idea, and love the tree idea....

post pics when all is done..can't wait to see them!

Back when C3 was in daycare, they made butterflies out of his footprints. You could do that with her?

Cute idea!!Chat Icon

OMG, I LOVE that bedding!!!!! Where did you find it?

As for the artwork, the first thing that came to my mind, was those projects that kids did during the fall when the leaves fall off the trees, and dip them in paint (but here use pastels that match the bedding) and press them onto paper and you see the outline and the veins of the leaf?
