ARGH! mad sad upset vent RSV Update: 2yrs old doubtful for RSV? (make it 3cases in her school)

So from my previous thread, AJ is sick

Feverish, vomiting (last night), coughing, sneezing, tired, bad appetite.

Today Jim stays home, I go to work and he takes her in.

I mentioned RSV because of you girls and told him to remind them that she's been wobbly at school and that Motrin isn't kicking the fever.

They said a cold
Caused by the allergins in the air, etc.

Ok I guess. Never knew a cold to have presistant fevers and vomitting but I'm no doctor.

After I got an email from school, left a message for the dr office and called hubby this is what I've learned.

#1 she was seen by a Nurse Pracitioner
#2 NP says "Daycare child, probably a cold"
#3 School as two confirmed cases of RSV - just got an email
#4 Jim forgot the RSV part to ask about (no biggie)
#5 according to daycare RSV comes off as cold minus the vomiting and fevers which do come with RSV

OH AND...
#6 due to the break out of illnesses in school and also as part of the handbook, a child CAN NOT go to school if they can not maintain a temp of less than 100 WITHOUT ANY medication or fever reducers for AT LEAST 24 hrs.

AJ is still feverish right this second so guess who's staying home tomorrow with her. Thankfully I got what I needed to get done, done today.

UPDATE:
So they called back (was it my second call that forced it?)

Sure it could be RSV but we didnt test her because she's over two.

There is no different treatment for RSV versus a cold.

Yes, RSV can be bad but only if it gets out of control. AJ's lungs are clear, her cough productive.

Fever can last up to 5days for either the cold OR the RSV.

Sure, bring her back we'll test her.

I feel obligated to at least KNOW if its RSV or not, make sense?

Ugh

Called hubby, she's dead to the world right now, out like a light. So i said as long as she's there before 5pm.

*sigh*

ETA2: nope AJ hasn't gotten tested or received results but in talking back and forth with daycare via email, another child in primary - but not AJ's class - has tested positive.

So I guess over 2 they can be diagnosed.

I just wanted to know so that I can tell Daycare in case. I mean what if AJ had a younger sibling with immune or breathing issues? right? am I crazy for wanting to know for sure?

Just called hubby he's on his way to the pedi.

Re: ARGH! mad sad upset vent RSV

why did she see an NP and not a doctor?

in any event, can he take her back? Chat Icon

from what I've read RSV is muy serious, and if she could have been exposed and has the symptoms, it's worth it to take her back if he can.

sucks though. the almost dismissive attitude b/c she goes to day care.

hope she feels better. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: ARGH! mad sad upset vent RSV

In response to your second post, our doctors said the same thing. We were all sick - me, Landon, Travis & Kylie. Kylie got really bad so she ended up in the hospital and only there did they test for RSV.. which was positive. They never tested my other kids bc it never got 'serious'. The treatment is just tylenol and nebulizer if breathing becomes an issue, and since we already had the neb & meds at home thats what the ped instructed for Travis and Landon. The said most likely Landon and Travis both had RSV also since it is very contagious and we KNOW for sure Kylie had it. (Landon had ear infection too.)
I would assume AJ did have RSV but really over age 2 its just another virus.Chat Icon

Our ped said that RSV is nasty for babies. Older children and adults, it's just a cold. Not fun either way but they like to keep diligent watch over babies and at risk children (preemies and immuno-suppressed) since it can get worse for them quick and harder for them to fight (can't blow nose, cough up, tell us they don't feel good, etc).

Another Update:
Now its three cases confirmed for RSV in her school.

Mads was tested for RSV last week when I mentioned to the PA that she'd been exposed. She tested positive. She was given steroids, cough syrup, and a nebulizer due to low O2 levels.

4 days later I had both Eliza and TJ at the doctor for the same symptoms. They tested TJ when I told the NP that Madelyn had tested positive. She seemed shocked that they had tested Mads. TJ came back positive for RSV, and we just assumed that Eliza has it as well.

We are just coming out of the weeds with this crap. It's a nasty virus.Chat Icon

It sounds like the flu to me. My boys had it a few weeks ago and apparently the flu shot is offering little immunity this year according to my ped And the ER dr when we were there. My kids both vomit the first day it started and than not again after the first day.

Negative small victory and I'll take it!

But the fever is still here.

I'm home with her today.

Daycare pretty much suggested she stay home the rest of the week. More cases are still coming in confirmed.

Thankfully my aunt said (not knowing she was sick) that she wanted AJ friday so it may work out.

thank you so much everyone for the nice comments and support. I really appreciate it. AJ is rarely sick and god knows I HATE it feeling unsure and lost.
