If it were me, and it was my sister's party at my mother's home (where my dogs don't reside), for the sake of my sister, I would put the dog away. It should be about your sister and her friends and having them be as comfortable as possible and having lots of fun!

making it as fun as possible would to have Dharma out!!! my sister WANTED her out with us! everytime she was brought in she got upsetChat Icon

Then to me, your mom was faced with a parenting choice. Does she encourage your sister to do what makes her happy or what makes her guest happy? There isn't a right or wrong to this- its just a personal choice.

For me, making guests feel comfortable is very important and it is a value I hope to teach my daughter. There is a time taht everone needs to do what is best for them, but IMO if you are having a party and inviting children to your home, their comfort level is more impotrant.

If it was Jordana, well she is only 5 months old so the conversation woudl be very one sided Chat Icon , but I would tell her that some of her guests are uncomfortable and we need to respect other people's issues. So we are putting Dharama inside for now, but that she can play with her later.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?

I think with kids you ahvbe be sensitive. Also some people are justa fraid of dogs, whether or not it's rational, you have to be sensitive.

I ahve friends who are afriad of cats, or who are so afriad of dogs that they won't come over because of my mom's YORKIE.. I mean she weighs 7lbs..what is htere to be afraid of?

If people are afriad they're afraid, maybe they were bit by a dog. When I was a kid my neighbors german shepard knocked me over and bit me int he torso, but I'm not afriad of dogs, but for some people they'd be traumatized over a lot less.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?

I'm not afraid of dogs that I "know". Even though we have a dog, I would never consider myself a dog lover. So I wouldn't think twice about putting the dog up when we have company. I just think it's a polite thing to do when you have company over who is afraid of dogs.

I personally avoid going to certain people's homes who have dogs. We have friends whose dog is a licker and always is on the furniture. I don't tolerate any of those things and since they won't control the dog, I just don't go there.

I also dont enjoy going to people's houses where they lay everywehre and any where especially if the dogs heavly sheds but I still go. Roxy is part of our family but I still treat her like a dog and am somewhat strict with her because she doesnt need the rein of the house. I do not let her on the couchs or beds.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?

Since my dog is kinda big and likes to jump on people with out my consent.

I try not to expose people to her unless there aware and she's too big to be around small children.

If someone comes over with a small child I leave her downstairs for as long as i can.

But at some point I have to let her out so i just warn people and if they want to go in the house or out front for a short period while she comes out that's fine.

But that's not to say that some pepole do go over board. If my dog wasn't so hyper It would be diffrent.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?

I've always been petrified of dogs. Living in teh city was tough...dogs everywhere. I had to suck it up and stop crossing the street everytime one came my way. The best way for me to get over it was to get my own dog. Now, I consider myself a dog lover!

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?

i used to be so scared of them before

small or big, dogs were not my thing

then a few years ago, my sister got one and it lived at my parents house.

now small dogs are fine with me and big dogs that are sweet are fine too
the dogs that jump all over and bark like crazy make me scared

I am afraid of big dogs and I am afraid of dogs that jump on me right away before I get to know them.
USUALLY once I spend a little bit of time with a dog then I am fine.

i HATE when ppl let their dogs jump on you. it drives me nuts.

Casey jumps and we have tried EVERYTHING in the book, including getting a trainer to stop her from doing this. She has doggie ADD. It is SO embarrassing, I have to put her away in another room when I have people over who don't like it..understandably so....but I don't "let" her...I just have a very very hard time controlling her. Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?

I love dogs- but I am afraid if there is a stray dog that is big walking aroung the street or something like that or if its someones dog that seems extremely aggressive.

I once brought my pug puppy to a party and a few kids and a few adults were scared of him Chat Icon He was only like 10 lbs and very friendly but a little hyper and some people are just not into dogs.

Re: Are You Afraid of Dogs?

The only dog breed that I'm nervous around is the German Shepard. I was bitten by one a few years ago and I haven't really trusted them ever since.
