I believe that you are only exempt if you are the primary full time caretaker of a child. You have to send a letter with the childs date of birth -- maybe proof of same. Don't remember exactly.

Re: Are PTWM exempt from jury duty?
My summons says that you need to write a letter and add a copy of birth certificate stating that you do not have childcare options. Do you they not believe you if you try this? lol I may be called on my day off and I will be so angry as that is my only free time. I should have tried writing a letter stating that I have zero childcare options on my days off.

I used BFing as a reason. I can't pump without my LO so to miss a full day of feedings would affect my supply. It worked 2 times :) I'm a PTWM and at the time only worked in 3-4 hour blocks.

Re: Are PTWM exempt from jury duty?
I just got a notice for jury duty it said that if you are the full time care giver for your child- as in a SAHM- you can ask to be excused. You have to send in their birth certificate along with a letter explaining that you are not employed and you cannot make other arrangements for their care. They said if you work part time, you must send a letter from your job that states you don't work full time- and I believe you will be exempted. They said that if you work FULL TIME- then you obviously have child care arrangements and can serve

SAHM are excempt. You just have to furnish your DC birth certificate. I was called, explained I am a SAHM and have no childcare if I needed to appear and I never had to serve nor have I been called back in the few years since I was first summoned.
They cannot require a SAHM to serve. You are the primary care for you child(ren) and many people, myself included, would have nobody to watch my kids if I had to serve. I would happily show up with my two kids in tow if it ever became an issue.

Ugh. I am so mad because I don't work full time and I am probably going to get called on my day off. Because I work I was too busy to really read the exemption section, so I am annoyed at myself, lol. I am too busy to do anything, errr!

I guess a DH could take a vaction day and watch kids.
And if it falls on one of your workign days then you would have childcare and not really be able to use the childcare exception.

dH is out of vacation days. Looks like I may have to pay to serve, not fair! I may get called tommorow, I am on the cusp.
Couldn't the DH of the SAhM take vaca also? Doesn't seem right to me.

They could. I don't think any exemption is fair. Why should I have to serve jsut because I go to work everyday.
They have been gettign stricter with exemptions and just becaue you are a SAHM does not mean you automatically get a pass.

Re: Are PTWM exempt from jury duty?
I wrote a letter a few months ago explaining that I was not able to get to Grand Jury duty in Brooklyn with my childcare situation, work schedule, and my husband's schedule. I received a letter saying I was excused from jury duty. Write the letter, it's worth a shot.

I agree! Can't hurt to write the letter. They cannot expect you to be able to arrange babysitting for your normal days home wth the kids.

Except that it does. I don't remember if it was on the summons or on their website but they gave specific directions for answering the summons as a SAHM.
I actually don't see anything unfair about. Realistically, as a working mom (or dad) the assumption is you have secured childcare every day so to have to appear for jury duty shouldn't be that hard. As a primary and sole caretaker of children every day it is flat out impossible (at least in my case) to find any childcare if I was required to serve. Everyone in my family works and you can't just drop off your kids in a daycare for a day here and there. I literally have no place to leave my kids if I had to appear.
Like I said earlier, if they did ever make an issue about it quite simply, I would be showing up to the courthouse with two kids. Is it really worth the their trouble to force a SAHM to appear when there are thousands of other people quite capable to serve? I don't think so and I guess they don't either since they give SAHM's the exception without a problem.
And FTR...........if I didn't have kids I would have no problem serving, I've done it before and it was not a big deal. I just cannot fathom them expecting me to serve given my situation.

I work pt and I just had my boss sign a letter that I work pt. I was excused since I don't have childare on the days I don't work. this was 2 years ago so maybe things have changed.

I dont mean to sound harsh but it is unfair, IMO. According to the telephone instructions I just listened to, PWTM with 20 or more weekly hours will not be exempt. Why should I have to incur over $100/day of excess childcare? I have already taken a pay cut to work less than 5 days. I am sure some families could not afford a few hundred extra for even 1 week. Not fair.
Unless you have ever been working mom, you cant possibly understand the stress that changes in schedule (due to JD, etc) and the related disruptions cause on an entire family. It is not fair to the WM, DH or the children. Plus, certain professions are very demanding and if you miss work to sit in a courtroom doing nothing, you will have to put in excess hours when you return. Again, not fair.
I am just venting because I am angry that I am stuck with a summons!!!!!!!!

Can you call and postpone or is it passed the date to do that. You could postpone and then when you get the summons again send in the letter and see what happens.

I understand what you're saying. I didn't mean to sound harsh either, just making the point that someone like me has ZERO access to childcare so to expect a SAHM to appear at all is kind of impossible. I can only assume they feel like if you already manage to work at least P/T and have some sort of childcare in place you can arrange your schedule and figure something out. I don't know if it's fair or not but I guess it is what it is.
I agree with the above poster, try postponing for now. My DH did it once with no problem. Hope you figure something out, I know it's a pain.

I know, that is very annoying. You don't know what day you will have to go in, plus what if they choose you for a trial. Then what do you do for child care?!
And DH's limited vacation time should not be used for this. Write the letter, you may be exempt. I'm a SAHM and haven't had to serve
