Are you supposed to sterilize the bottles every time you wash them?

Do you plan to get a bottle sterilizer?

I feel like this is excessive but I'm not sure.

I plan on using the dishwasher. My friend has the Dr. Brown's bottles and the dishwasher baskets and just washes them in the dishwasher everyday.

As per a couple of peds - her 1st, and now her 2nd... they aren't necessary, b/c once you take them out of the sterile field they are no longer sterile as you are exposing them to air.

If they were in sterile bags, and you weren't opening them til you were about to use them it would be a diff story.

i got a microwave sterilizer because to be honest, i did not feel comfortable giving my baby anything that hadn't been sterilized at least once, that is JMO.

i use it for everything - nipples, pacifiers, my pump accessories. i also use it once in a while when i want to get things *really* clean.

if nothing else, it gives me peace of mind.

I got Dr. Brown's bottles and just ran them through the dishwasher, and will continue to do so.

I'll just be boiling the nipples as I don't have a dishwasher and all of my girlfriends told me that the sterilizer was a waste of space. If you have a dishwasher, which they do, they just throw them in there.

I hand wash (dont own a dishwasher) and its fine.

We did get one of those steam santizer bags from my Medela accessory pak (you can buy them separately at BRU) and we use that for out first 'cleaning' of all bottles, nipples, pacifiers. It works great as it goes into your microwave! Chat Icon It folds flat so we can store it in the cabinet against the wall.

But no.. i felt a Bottle sterilizer was excessive.

Don't have a sterilizer, never did...I only boiled the bottles and nipples the 1st time and then here and there...they say you shouldnt boil them every time for whatever reason...Aside from that, I either handwashed or used the dishwasher Chat Icon

I boiled my bottles nightly. I would just put up a big pot of water. It was easy and I always knew that the bottles were as clean as could be.

You can just use the dishwasher as well. An official sterilizer is not necessary.

Re: Are bottle sterilizers necessary? Can we just throw bottles into the dishwasher?

i registered for a sterilizer but am really second guessing it....we have a dishwasher with a setting for bottles actually (a kenmore) so I would rather jsut run that and kill 2 birds with one stone...actually let me ask that....can you sterilize them while washing other dishes? or has to be bottles alone

I sterilized with my first for the first 3 months...after that we switched to the Playtex ones with the drop ins, so we just sterilized the nipples.

Can you boil the plastic bottles? Will they melt?

I don't plan to get glass bottles.

They won't melt. You can boil them without a problem. We used to boil DD's pacifiers too.
