The streak is over!!!
This was the first time I was not in Floral Park to hear the roar of the crowds or AT The Stakes and I am so disappointed I missed it. I KNEW he could do it and I KNEW it would happen since I wasn't there this year!! But it was so exciting. And I guess it's preggo hormones because I cried and he came around the final stretch.

A horse did break down in one of the earlier races and had to be euthanized on the track. I hate this sport

I'm not a big animal person but there's something about these animal sports that get to me as well.
It doesn't seem like it's about the animal best interest.
More like how much some people are making off the betting.

I agree. I don't know much about the sport but it seems cruel for the horses.

Ugh, was just having this discussion yesterday. I am a huge animal lover and hate horse racing. I was actually hoping American Pharroh wouldn't win, just because I hate to see people profitting from forcing an animal to do something. I wish they would ban horse racing Also hate the pigsty my moms town of Floral Park turns into.

It is cruel. Google Ferdinand. From a champion to the slaughter house.
This poor horse was only 4 too.

Not offended at all! I thought it was pretty impressive that he one the triple crown but I feel bad for them, especially after reading about how many horses are euthanized after getting injured from racing.

I was not offered. Horses have been part of my life since I was a kid. I stopped watching the races after Seattle slew died years ago. He was my favorite, but I know what goes on behind the scenes.
I did not know a horse was put down

Agreed. I am very against this. Personally I think it's cruel, I can't get past the horses getting hit to make them go faster. My husbands tells me I am wrong and the animals ar well taken care of but I'm not, into it.

Apology.
I loved the Belmont race. I have had horses of my own and know what extraordinary animals they are. This horse was gorgeous.
I also know more than I wish I did about what happens in the racing industry, but most horses involved in it live in clean comfortable stalls and are treated well, especially the top ones. Promising ones get retired to breeding, both males and females, others end up as riding horses afterwards. Sadly, many do break down - get joint or ligament problems - as they are athletes and because no one wants to own a horse that has no use they do get put down or sent for slaughter.
What happens to race horses is NOTHING compared what is done every day to the millions of commercially raised pigs and chickens, and to young calves raised for veal. How they are housed, treated and eventually processed is a nightmare.
I haven't eaten veal in years and never given it to my kids because calves are kept confined in small oval containers that they can't even turn around in - I've seen them at farms. And, after reading how horribly cruelly pigs are treated on giant commercial farms and how intelligent they are - smart as dogs, I stopped eating pork and giving it to my family. I just ethically not justify it. I try to buy humanely raised chicken and eggs, but I know that, even so, the animals lead poor quality, short lives just so that my family and I can eat them. I won't touch regular chicken because I know they are crowded into cages or pens where they can hardly turn around and have had their beaks painfully cut off so they won't peck and injure each other because of that overcrowding. Plus, they are fed antibiotics to prevent disease due to their bad living conditions.
According to everything I have read about it, their housing stinks so badly it's hard for people to breathe in it. Can you imagine what it's like for the poor creatures who have no choice but to live there? Pigs are kept in similar conditions. I simply cannot ignore or condone the cruelty done to commercially raised pigs or chickens by buying any anymore. It is so much worse that any racing industry abuses. I do get beef for my family, but grass raised and without antibiotics.
