Anyone's child have low blood sugar?

I am not sure if this is the situation we have but Friday I picked dd up from prek and we had to run an errand. The whole time we were out, we looked pale, lethargic and almost like she was going to puke. She was not herself in any wayChat Icon we obviously didnt stay out long. When i i took her home I drove the whole way asking her how she felt and she said "fine, just perfect" in a way that makes a mother wonder if it is time to pull over. When we got in the house, my mom offered her a snack ( a sweet one) and within a few minutes she was giddy and lively.

This morning she woke up and played with dh for a little while before breakfast and then she looked really pale a d asked for water. I gave her some water and then she looked like she was going to puke. She went to the bathroom and spat up water and phlegm. Then she alternated with being hungry and not hungry and nauseous and not. Finally she decided she was hungry and had two bagelsChat Icon and has been happy and herself again.

Low blood sugar?

Sooooo nervous now.

Maybe she is coming down with a bug.. If she has phelgm, it may make her nauseous...When I go low, I get lightheaded and woozy. I am pale and sweaty.. Go to the pedi for a blood test.

Re: Anyone's child have low blood sugar?

yes. This has been happening to my 4 year old daughter. My 5 year old is a T1 diabetic so when my 4 year old started complaining of feeling low I started testing her using her sisters meter(and she has been low each time). She has had it happen about 10 times over the past few months. Her pedatrician did some blood work and an A1c(The A1C test result reflects your average blood sugar level for the past two to three months) and all came back normal. She has an appointment with an endocrinologist on the 10th of this month and we are hoping we get some sort of answers. Her signs of lows are she gets shaky, pale, whiny and seems tired. Do you have anyone that uses a blood glucose monitor that you could use to test her when she acts like this? I would talk to her Ped right away.

Hey Jules! I don't know if I ever told you, but I have low blood sugar. If my blood sugar drops, my hands shake, I look pale, I feel dizzy and complainy and then eventually I pass out.

I had problems passing out when I was younger. The doctor does this test, like the one you do when you are pregnant where you drink that stuff and they take blood every hour or so.

Other than that, I limit my sugar and make sure to always have a snack with me. I really can't go more than two or three hours without eating during the day. Also-really suggary stuff makes me feel really weak and yucky.

Also, the nausea from the low blood sugar can make you feel like you are going to puke and be really phlegmy...it feels like you are going to puke. For me, I feel like I need to spit a lot, then my vision goes-like I see all black, and then usually, I pass out right after that.

Robin! I was remembering this today. I didn't remember the phlegmy part but good to know you experienced that.

I guess I just need to pack some sweet snacks for school and make sure she doesn't go too long without eating?

Re: Anyone's child have low blood sugar?

Actually its counter intuitive, but a snack with some sugar but not overly sugary is best as a preventative. Like whole grain crackers and cheese or something to that effect. Low blood sugar is actually your body over-processing sugar, so a high sugar snack is a quick fix in an emergency, but a balanced snack between meals is the best thing you can do. Have something super-suggary on hand in case she is already sick (I find that OJ is enough to level me out in an emergency) but make sure she eats a healthy snack between meals and she should be ok.

I know for me, certain very suggary snacks (ice cream with lots of toppings, iced mochas, etc) actually can make me sick, since I think my body processes it so fast, it makes my blood sugar actually drop. That is why I try to keep it moderate with the sweets and have more veggies and whole grains.

Poor thing! Its no fun! I passed out off of a riser during my 6th grade graduation in front of everyone-I walked right off the stage and just stood there crying until my mom got up and took me to go get some juice, lol, so I am used to it!
