Anyone with a chimney?
How are we supposed to care for a chimney, meaning what is the yearly maintenance required? We have lived in this house for 1 yr. and got our chimney cleaned and practically redone last year b/c the inside liner had to be replaced. Some chimney company keeps calling me telling me they have always cleaned our chimney and they want to come back...I have no idea who these people are and now they are getting nasty telling me that they need to clean our heating flute (I think that's what she said???) or we will die of carbon monoxide.

Re: Anyone with a chimney?
You should be cleaning your Chimney yearly. We replaced our liner 2 years ago and we just had the company come this year that replaced it to clean it because we have a warranty with them.
Chimney companies IMO are ruthless. When we were looking to have our liner replaced and getting estimates, one company showed up 2 hours late, then about an hour after they left they called up to schedule the job. I said we haven't made a decision yet. They said that their rep who came to our house said that we booked the job. I said well he was 2 hours late and now he is lying so I can tell you that I JUST made a decision I WON'T be going with your company.
Don't let them bully you. Stick with the company that replaced your liner if you were happy with them

I keep getting calls too. When we got the house inspected, the inspector said there are a lot of shady chimney companies out there that take people for rides. Not sure what we are going to do yet.

Did you use the fireplace?
The company we used told not we did not need to do it yearly if we did not use the fireplace.

Re: Anyone with a chimney?
If you have a boiler and it's connected to that chimney I believe it should be done every year.

Your boiler and fireplace should have their own chimneys.
I have a great recommendation for a chimney company if anyone is interested. Reasonably priced, honest and came highly recommended by someone we trust.

Re: Anyone with a chimney?
I think if you have oil is supposed to be every year and if you have gas its every two years. If you have a fireplace I think thats supposedto be once a year too. But honestly I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Your boiler and fireplace should have their own chimneys.
Our boiler uses the same "chimney" as the fireplace but they are separated inside the chimney. Does that make sense? There are 2 exhaust systems.
So, I did not use the fireplace last winter. We did not need to have it cleaned. Meanwhile, the portion used by our boiler had to be cleaned several times. It's divided in our chimney.
