Anyone who had an ultrasound around 37 weeks to estimate weight...

...what was the estimate, when did the baby come out, and how big was he/she?

I just had an ultrasound yesterday at 37 weeks and 3 days, and the estimate was 8 pounds, 10 ounces Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
My first was 9 pounds, 1 ounce at two days before my due date -- looks like this one is going to be much bigger. Ouch!

From what I've seen personally & heard, those are not very accurate.

My 34 week sonogram had Joseph weighing 4lbs. He was born at 6lbs 7oz three days later.

They get the measurements by using the size of the femur, head circumference & length. I wish we were all measured that way.

Don't start panicking yet.Chat Icon

I did with my first and at the end of my 36th week he measured around 7lbs. He was born the first day of my 37th week and was 7lbs 2 oz. But I hear they can be inaccurate so you never know. My SIL had on the day of her induction and it said over 11lbs and the baby was 8.5lbs.

Not to scare you, but I had one at 37 weeks and was told the baby was over 8lbs. I was in tears! DD came one week late and she wound up being 9 lbs 7oz. I wound up havinga c section bc she didnt want to come out.

DW had an ultrasound in the am, and gave birth that night. DS apparently lost over 2 lbs in only a few hours.... Chat Icon

We didn't buy any tiny clothes because all the ultrasounds kept saying he would be a big baby...... he wasn't... he was under 6lbs, and the last ultrasound put him at over 8lbs.

My OB didn't do them b/c he said they really are inaccurate.

He did tell me that you tend to have bigger babies each time and it was true for me. Sarah was 7lbs 8oz and Andy was 8lbs 1oz.

Re: Anyone who had an ultrasound around 37 weeks to estimate weight...

All along my belly (when they take the tape measure) was a week to 2 behind. All my sono's (I had 3 and one at 36 weeks) all had her on the smaller side. My doc was convinced the most she would be was probably 7lbs. Well while I was pushing I kept thinking to myself it shouldn't be this hard to push out a small baby especially since DS was 8lbs. Well DD came into the world wieghing in at 8lbs13oz. We were all shocked and trying to figure out where she was hiding out inside me Chat Icon . With DS they were right on. At my 36 week sono with him he was around 7lbs and was born 3 weeks later at 8lbs.

I think it all depends on good the sono tech is and how much the baby is moving. If the baby is moving alot then it is harder to get an accurate measurement. Usually with subsequent pregnancies the weight goes up too with each child. Not in all cases but a lot. My Doc did tell me after DS that I would have no problem delivering a 9lb baby and she was right.

My last sono was at 34 weeks, they estimated her to be almost 7lbs at that time. She was born at 35w1d and she was 6lb 13oz...pretty close I would say.

Re: Anyone who had an ultrasound around 37 weeks to estimate weight...

My dr said those sonos could be under or over by 2lbs. For me with ds #2 it was under (they said 9lbs something and he was 8.3lbs) with my second they messured while I was in the hosp before I had my c-sec and they were only off by an oz (they said 8.3 and he was 8.2)

Re: Anyone who had an ultrasound around 37 weeks to estimate weight...

I am having my 37 week one tomorrow and I am having the same concerns. Many people have told me that theirs were way off, but these are people who haven't had babies in the last year or two. I have one friend who had a baby a few weeks ago and hers was right on.

I am measuring big (both in the sono and my fundal height) and the doctor says the baby feels big when she is touching me. I tend to believe my sonos have been pretty accurate so far.

I think those sonograms are right on. I went for a sono a day before my due day and the baby measured 9 15 and she was born 9 14 1/2. Now i think thats pretty accurate.

Mine were right on - I believe the error of margin is something like +1 or -1 lb - but remember it also has to do with the skill of who is doing it.
