Anyone TTC personally have a birth defect or a history in the family

I was born with a birth defect which hasn't been proven to be linked to genetics but I'm still concerned about it. I was thinking of seeing a geneticist although it wouldn't change us wanting to have a baby, if anything it would just be for preparation sake. I've been reading that women with a birth defect or a history should double up on their folic acid. I'm already taking a multi-vitamin with 400mg. I was thinking of taking an additional supplement of folic acid but was wondering if 800 mg would be too much.

I don't have any but there are some that run in my family - open skull and open spine are 2 of them. My cousin was born with both and died shortly after birth. My other cousin was born with a very mild case of spina bifida and she is OK.

Also, asperger's syndrom runs in my family.

I've let my RE know this and they did run panels of blood on me to detect these things and I will probably have an amnio too.

I have to tell my OBGYN when I go back to her next week - she may want to run more tests on me since I havent seen her at all yet since the IUI worked.

I'm not real worried about it though.

I don't have a birth defect...but people will argue that point. Chat Icon

I was really sick when I was one and had some problems develop from that...but as far as family defects there aren't any.

My sister however developed a defect when she was prego with her first baby (that didn't survive) and after being told she wouldn't have children...she was prego with # 2. He was born and a year later found out he has autism.

She had ALL the gene tests done and every test under the sun was done to her and her DH after losing the first baby to Turners syndrome (genetically passed)...goes to show you you never really know...just have to wish for the best!
