Re: anyone planning on breastfeeding?
Part of the new healthcare reform bill included an item that said that companies that have more than 49 employees must provide a private pumping room for recent mothers. I don't know details on when that will be enforced, but you should talk to your HR department about it now to see what they say.

Re: anyone planning on breastfeeding?
Why are you under the impression you won't be able to pump?
When the Healthcare bill passed, it included a change to the Federal labor laws that states employers must accommodate pumping women for up to 1 year after baby's birth.

Re: anyone planning on breastfeeding?
you should def look at craigslist and I would recommend the medela double pump. I went back to work after 10 weeks and it was the best. Its quick and efficient. Go on craigslist and buy just the pump itself, then you can get all the parts to it at babies r us etc, and the tubing from medela or online. Pumping takes about 15 minutes and in the beginning I was prob pumping 3-4 times a day and work 9-5. Your boss has to accomodate you. You will figure out what works best for you pumping wise depending on your supply. I usually did once in the morning then at lunch then the end of the day. I had no frozen supply which was my mistake so whatever I pumped was fresh milk for the next day. My DD drank about 4 bottles of 4 oz each so it worked out well. Then i woudl nurse her at night and in the mornign before work. I did it for 13 months!! Of course towards the end I pumped less. Hope this helps!! It can be done!! good luck mama!!

Re: anyone planning on breastfeeding?
Have you contacted your health insurance? A lot of heath insurance companies are now covering the cost completely or a large precentage of the cost of a pump.
Feeding your child is a priority and if that is how you wish to feed your child, you'll find a way to pump at work. Smokers get smoke breaks, right? New BF moms should get pump breaks

I am really going to try my best, maybe for the first 2 months (if I produce milk)...I will not have time to pump at work...I can always say that I atleast tried.

Call your insurance company and just ask if they cover the cost of a breast pump.

I read an article that hospital grade pumps are the only ones safe to share because of some kind of screen they have in them. A regular pump, like a Medela pump can put you at risk for catching a virus.
JMHO....but I wouldn't buy a pump off of craigslist.
I used the Medela pump. It's a double. When I went back to work, the first 3 months I was working from 8 to 2 pm. So I had no problems because I only missed like 2 feedings. Once I started working full days, 8:30 to 5ish, it was hard to keep my supply up without pumping during the day. DD self weened at 7 months.
You will have a hard time keeping up the supply if you don't pump during the day. At least that's what I found.
I could have gone to the bathroom. But who wants to pump BM in the bathroom?

Re: anyone planning on breastfeeding?
I plan to breastfeed this time around, god willing. DS wouldn't latch, so I did pump for as long as I possibly could.
Everyone's supply is different, I had to pump every 2 hours for 30 min. with my medela double breast pump to keep up with how much my son ate.
I would talk to your HR department now about you pumping when returning to work. I was finishing my BS when DS was born, and I used to pump in my car ((thank god for tinted windows and my nursing cover lol)).

Yep. That was part of the reason I bought and Ameda Purely Yours. I read too many stories when deciding of other mothers who had Medelas that developed mold inside. Blech.

thanks to the girls on here for letting me know that. i just got my medela freestyle for $30 since my insurance company paid 90%. i plan on going back to work at 10-12 weeks pumping till DD is about 6 months. i agree with the other ladies definitely look into the laws about mom's pumping in the workplace.

Re: anyone planning on breastfeeding?
you will have to pump during the day. i promise. your boobs will tell you otherwise. there are times when DD (12days old) is sleeping but i have to wake up to pump or my breasts will explode. you can probably space it to every 3 hrs and still be successful at producing enough milk.
best of luck!

I Bfed DS for a year. I went back to work at 7 months and I pumped and bursed when I got home. I made it to a year. I just recently heard that the federal government has a law now that if your employee has over 50 employess they must provide a room (other than a bathroom) for you to pump. So hopefully you'll be able to do it at your job. It's a full time commitment and I wish you the best of luck!

Thank you for the link, I'm reading up on it now. I have a Medela on my registry, but now I might switch it!

Ok so I called my insurance company and they told me that they dont cover breast pumps. I cant afford $200+ for a good one.

I think I will probably get a bunch of gift cards to BRU and BBB, so I plan on using those to purchase the pump. I don't think my insurance covers it either.

Re: anyone planning on breastfeeding?
I BF my first for 15 months and plan to BF my second. I pumped at work for a year. In the beginning, I pumped twice a day, since I missed two feedings. I pumped for about 20 minutes. As he got older, I wound up pumping for about 15 minutes.
Pumps are expensive but lots of websites have double electric pumps on sale.

Re: anyone planning on breastfeeding?
You can also try renting a pump from the hospital. Otherwise, a friend of mine has a Medela Instyle that she is looking to sell, you would just have to buy the tubing/accessories. FM me if you want her info. Good luck!
