Anyone here celebrate both Easters? (Orthodox/Catholic)

Is there anyone here that celebrates (what I call) Greek Easter and Catholic Easter?

It's never been an "issue" in my family, but this year it is, and it's a month apart.

I'm Catholic, but my mom is Greek Orthodox, and we usually celebrate Greek Easter with the entire family (I am very close with my mom's side of the family) and Catholic Easter is usually "skipped" in terms of celebrations - we'll go to Midnight Mass, and that's about it.

This year, my mother decided she wanted to celebrate Catholic Easter (this Sunday) and now DH is pizzed b/c his mother is having Easter as well.

My best solution was that we'd go to both....but he's just not "getting" it and now we're fighting b/c he's calling me selfish for celebrating TWO Easters!!!!!

I have to be honest here. And please don't be offended.

I understand both sides. My DH is Greek and they usually celebrate Greek Easter. I mean, they are totally Greek Orthodox. Sometimes they "decide" to celebrate what they call "American Easter" and I think its a little bit selfish, if there's something I want to do with my family. You can't follow holidays as its convenient for you.

But, I also understand that since everyone is in the Easter "spirit" now, that your mom wants to celebrate now. Greek Easter isn't until April 27th which is forever away.

Either way, I hope it works out. I would just tell your mom that you can stop by for the early part of the day, but you really have to celebrate with DH's family, considering that your mom will probably do Greek Easter, too. Chat Icon

I'm not offended at all, and thank you for your honesty.

The "thing" is - my mother is GO, but Dad, me, my two brothers - we're all Catholic. My mother is doing it for us, since we're "left out" each year.

I just can't understand why my DH is calling ME selfish...since I do celebrate Easter on Sunday like him! I told him that my mother was starting Easter at 2pm, and his mother is starting at 6pm...why can't we do both???

Oh! Well then, of course you can do both! If they both wanted you for dinner, that might be an issue. Just try not to gorge yourself on the spanikopita and you'll be fine! I say do both, that's easy. Especially if you were raised Catholic. My DH was raised Greek Orthodox, hence my anger toward the celebrating "American Easter."

Being that one starts soo much later than the other, you can DEFINITELY do both. Just don't eat too much at your mom's.

Dh is GO and I am Catholic. We will be celebrating Catholic Easter this Sunday at our house with everyone (his family included) and we will be celebrating Greek Easter at our house again with everyone (my family included). Thankfully, we (us and both of our families) celebrate each holiday together. We never split.

Re: Anyone here celebrate both Easters? (Orthodox/Catholic)

My husband is Catholic and I am Greek Orthodox. We usually celebrate the "American Easter" with his family and the "Greek Easter" with mine. However, this year his parents are away in Florida, so we are kind of laying low on the American Easter and will probably just have a small dinner at home. My kids do not get Easter baskets until the Greek Easter.

The hard part is when both Easters fall on the same day.Chat Icon

I am GO and DH is Catholic so we do the same thing.

American Easter with his mom, grandmother, and sister at a restaurant and Greek Easter with my family at my aunt's house. It usually works out okay unless they fall on the same day. Then we usually do dinner one place and dessert somewhere else.

This year for Greek Easter I'll be at a wedding in Syracuse so I'm just celebrating American Easter with his mom and my mother said my immediate family will go out to dinner one night before Greek Easter to celebrate.
