Anyone have to take the 3 hour twice?

I took the one hour test at about 11 weeks. They wanted to test me due to a family history of diabetes. I failed the one hour test, ( not sure how, I fasted, but that is another story) I then went on to pass the three hour test.

I am told that they want to test me again at the routine 26 weeks just to make sure I do not have GD.

Has anyone taken this test twice? What were your results?

I really hope to pass again.

I have been trying to be cognizant of what I eat. I minimize the intake of sweets, drink mostly water with maybe one glass of OJ, or fruit juice.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

hmm do you know what your numbers were with the 3 hour, maybe you were borderline passing? I've never heard of taking it twice. Sounds to me like for some reason they think you have GD maybe because your 1 hour results were a lot higher than your 3 hour?

I failed the 1 hour by a significant amount so my doctor didn't want to put me through the 3 hour test when it was obvious I had GD. I have no family history of diabetes. I had to cut out juice completely from my diet since they are loaded with sugar. Eat lots of veggies, fruits, and whole grains if you are worried about your sugar intake. On the plus side, it's better they find out if you have GD now so you can start taking the proper measures for you and baby. Chat Icon Sorry they are putting you through it again though.

They said it is routine to do the test twice for people with a family history.

Not sure of my 3 hour #'s, but the dr was not concerned. She says they do this as a precaution.

I have an appt next will inquire further.

there's a reason you will have to take it 2X....

GD is driven by the placenta... as it grows over times, symptoms get worse. becuase of your diabetes history, you were instructed to take a glucose tolerance test super-early. Just becuase you passed now at 11 weeks (when the placenta is tiny) does not mean you will not have GD when the placenta is big in the 3rd tri.

so, inevitably, you'll need to be re-tested. Even if you get a GD diagnosis then, it's really not that bad for the majority of moms... just stick to the diet and keep monitoring Chat Icon

My growth sono at 36.5 weeks shows that scone isn't even too big. he's in the 86%, which makes sense, becuase both DH and I are very tall. his waistline was small so we know he's not being stressed by sugar levels Chat Icon

I was just looking at the print out my doc's office gives out which basically summarizes all the tests and schedule of everything.

It has two 3 hours on there, with the qualifier that that is for high risk patients-- so, if you are at high risk for diabetes, it sounds like that may be standard practice.

This pretty much sums it up. Thanks!!! I will hope for the best. I am 21 weeks now so I will take it in about 5 weeks.

You did the 3 hour so early? I thought it could not be done sooner than 24 weeks?

I just did my 3 hr due to family history in my 25th week. I didn't even do the 1 hr, straight to the 3 hr. But I did pass.

Yes I had the one hour - failed then the three hour and passed. Apparently, if they feel you are at risk, they can send you as early as they feel.

I will have to take the 3 hour again just to make sure I have not developed GD in between testing.

I did not know this. Having said that, I guess you can fail this time around b/c the demands on the pancreas will change as the gestation period/weight gain, etc change.

Chat Icon you will pass. I don't know if what you eat/don't eat will matter. I was under the impression that it will happen regardless if you are prone to it. Even when you read the true requirements for the test, they suggest you eat a high carb diet for a few days before the test. NOT to limit your diet by just eating protein, let's say, for true results (other than fasting for the test itself). But not 100% sure, this is just what I have read.
