anyone have an underactive thyroid?
hello! i was just diagnosed about a month ago with an underactive thyroid. The dr said its from being pregnant (my daughter is now 18 months) so im not sure how long i have had this problem but i would say the past 6 months or so ive been extremely tired and had migraines. i was put on synthroid. Anyway...DH and I plan to try some point this year to TTC and i was wondering if any of you could tell me what your OB/GYN said about TTC and the medication and/or being on the meds while PG? i have to make an appt with my OB/GYN anyway for a pap but it wont be for a while and i wanted to know from everyones experience what action was takien... I know i want to get my hormone levels under control before TTC but if i try in the next 6 months, thats not too far away and i want to know how to prepare my body. THANKS!!!!

Re: anyone have an underactive thyroid?
I have a hypothyroid. I'm about 8 weeks pg. My obgyn said to call my endocronologist and they'll check my levels about 3 times throughout the pregnancy to see if the medication has to be adjusted.

Re: anyone have an underactive thyroid?
I was told my TSH level was elevated when I had bloodwork to confirm my pregnancy at 5wks. They still don't know if it was the pregnancy, or a problem prior to the pregnancy. I was put on synthroid also.
If you already have been diagnosed with the underactive thyroid, and are taking the synthroid, I would just talk to your MD to make sure it's monitored - so when you do get pregnant again, they can adjust your doseage accordingly.
Taking synthroid while pregnant is perfectly safe.

Re: anyone have an underactive thyroid?
synthroid is just synthetic thyroid hormone, so don't worry, it's completely safe.
pregnancy can alter your thyroid hormone levels, so if you've already got thyroid issues you'll definitely need to get checked more often. but it should be fine.

Re: anyone have an underactive thyroid?
I have had hypothyroidism (underactive) for about 4 years now and it took a long time to get my levels to a point where I feel pretty normal.
Before TTC my endocrinologist wanted my levels to be a little lower than normal, but not too low, and I had been a little lethargic anyway, so he raised my Synthroid.
He also said that when I become pregnant to have my blood drawn and send him the results just to make sure everything was fine. Sometimes when you are pg, you need a little extra Synthroid due to the pregnancy.
It's hard to find a good endo, I know that from experience, so make sure yours is listening to how you feel, not just what your bloodwork suggests.
Good Luck!!!!

Re: anyone have an underactive thyroid?
I have underactive thyroid. I had it prior to getting PG. Being on the meds while being PG is necessary and 100% safe. Synthroid is just replasing something that your body isn't getting, kind of like a vitamin. Your levels should be closely monitored while you are PG. I think I saw my endo every month while I was pg or every other month.
My daughter will be 2 this month and 100%. She will have to be check for thyroid issues as she gets older ONLY because it's genetic in my family. Both my dad and I have it.
If you have any questions please feel free to FM me
