anyone have a beta fish?
MIL bought Roman one in those glass blocks and it hasn't eaten ANYTHING in over 5 days. It doesn't really swim around a lot and I was wondering if I should take it out and just put it in a regular bowl? Anyone know anything about these fish? This thing has no will to live, I was practically trying to hand feed it.

Have you changed the water? They are affected by bad water quality. What is the temperature? Bettas are sensitive to water temp b/c they are a tropical fish and need a temp of at least 75.
A bigger tank with fish water might help.

I agree, change the water and put it in a bigger tank. It's probably sick

I've had several, and I've had them in those glass cubes. Tap waper isn't good for them because its got chlorine & other stuff in it. Bottled water would be better, but not from the fridge. Good luck!

Re: anyone have a beta fish?
I had one until yesterday. Of all days to croak! My son flushed the toilet after saying a prayer and then sobbed. Now when he looks at the toilet he says the fish's name and cries.
but as for your question, we had him in a plastic tank, but he was pretty active in the beginning. towards the end he kind of floated across the bottom.

YES, the same thing. MIL had her for a few days and she was swimming around she was so excited to give it to him and now it's like it's dying. I changed the water twice and used room temperature bottled water.

Doesn't matter if you use bottled water, you still have to treat the water. Get a water treater from the pet store.
Also how long have you had the tank? It could be the natural process of cycling with ammonia, nitrite and how it changes to nitrate. Every new tank has that happen and there really isn't a way for it to stop.
ETA- is his belly big or pinecone-y looking? It could be dropsy which is really common in bettas. A little Epson salt helps.

Re: anyone have a beta fish?
I has a beta in a hexagon shaped block thing in college for over 2 years. It even survived the drive home 5 hours in the backseat of my car. I don;t think the bowl is the problem.
Go to the pet store, they sell these little bottles of water conditioner, use like 3 drops every time you change the water, even bottled. I always used room temp water that had been boiled, but it still needs conditioner. Something with the minerals.
Also make sure you arent over feeding. They dont need a lot of food or even to be fed every day, every other day is fine. Too much food pollutes the water and can kill them.

Re: anyone have a beta fish?
Whatever you do, don't get a bigger tank. I made the mistake of putting my sons 1st beta in one and it croaked. They like to be in small surroundings as far as everything else I just use plain old tap water. He is about 2 years old now.
