anyone ever make salt dough with their kids?

I've seen a few different variations of the recipe online. I've never made it before, so please share your recipes/experiences. I bought plastic cookie cutters for ornaments and acrylic paint so far

I actually made some yesterday, it was pretty easy. I found a recipe on pinterest, 1 cup flour, 1/2 cup warm water, and 1/2 cup salt. I put everything in my mixer until it became a dough like consistency, I think I may have added a tablespoon or two more water. If you add too much water just add a little more flour. I was able to make 8 ornaments I think. I put them in the oven at 200 degrees for 4 hours to dry them out. I didn't paint them but the recipe I used said you could, they also said you could add a few drops of food coloring to the dough to give them a little color. I wrote on mine with a sharpie marker, they came out nice, I will definitely make them again.

Silly question, but they get painted after baking, right?

We're in the process of making these santa hand prints. I made two batches and got 4 handprints from each (8 month old sized hands though). I just mixed by hand, divided into 4 balls, rolled each flat right on the cookie sheet (lined with a silpat), and baked 3 hours. The back was a bit tacky so I let them dry on a rack over night once they were cool and they dried the rest of the way. So far I've only gotten the backs painted using acrylic paint. DH is in charge of the artistic part of the painting and outlining. Hopefully they be cute enough to post once they're done!

I used to do this all the time with my mom growing up. Loved it as a kid and will do it when DS gets older.

It might actually be easier at that age if they would sleep through it! DD was all over the place and not thrilled about having her handprint taken.

We made these. I got the idea off Pinterest. If I remember correctly I had to add more water than it said to get right consistency. Also whatever thickness it says to make it I would suggest doing thinner mine are too thick and heavy. The thinner ones I did came out better. External Image
