Anyone ever have a colonoscopy?

Were you sedated? How did you feel afterwards? Could you eat afterwards?

I'm taking my dad for one tomorrow and want him to be as comfortable as possible...

TIA!

My sis was sedated. She said the hardest part was the prep.

Good luck to your dad.

Re: Anyone ever have a colonoscopy?

Thanks girls!

He is on a liquid diet today and already called me from work complaining he is starving Chat Icon, so I wanted to bring something with us that he can eat right after the procedure.

He was just telling me what he has to do tonight...ugh! Chat Icon

My mom is in Florida so I was wondering if he would need me to hang out with him when I take him home. If he is sedated I will definitely stay with him for a while to make sure he is ok.

Re: Anyone ever have a colonoscopy?

i thought u had to be sedated for this procedure and afterwards, you are too messed up to do anything. generally, you have to stay in the office till they clear you to leave and they want to make sure you have a ride home. also, no heavy machiney (cars, cooking) for at least 6 hours or so until you feel normal again

Re: Anyone ever have a colonoscopy?

I've had one. The worst part is the preparation before when you "clean out" Chat Icon

During the procedure, I was knocked out. I woke up feeling fine, but I had a lot of gas. I was able to eat and felt fine.

If they find something they will usually take a biopsy of whatever it is, so he might not be able to take aspirin but the doctor will tell him all of that.

Good Luck to him Chat Icon

Re: Anyone ever have a colonoscopy?

Yep the prep blows..the test is a breeze and after I ate breakfast.

Glad that's over.

Had some bloating and gas and was somewhat drowsy but was ok.

Re: Anyone ever have a colonoscopy?

I had one done too and like Christine said the hardest part is the "cleaning out of your system" part. I did not bring the liquid instead I took the pills. I was sedated, relaxed a little in the office and DH (at the time FI) took me out for lunch because I was starving.

Re: Anyone ever have a colonoscopy?

I've taken my Dad to get one every year for the last 5 years. Since my Dad had a stroke and everything on his left side is a bit slower (including his intestines) the poor man must prep for 3 DAYSChat Icon in order to be "ready".

If your Dad is on any blood pressure/blood thinner meds they should have been cut out about 7 days ago.

I sit with my Dad in the recovery room. They give him juice and won't let him leave until he "produces a lot of wind"Chat Icon The poor nurses, they get to sit there and hear people "puffing"Chat Icon My Dad laughs, he can't believe he's enouraged to do it.

Then it's off to a light lunch. He might be starving but it's usually suggested that they don't "stuff themselves" with the first meal.

Re: Anyone ever have a colonoscopy?

do you have a choice if you want to be totally knocked out, or just a sedated? i would prefer general anesthesia...and this might be TMI, but what does the prep consist of? TIA

Re: Anyone ever have a colonoscopy?

I've had about 7 of them. The absolute worst part is the prep. Drinking the stuff is like a fear factor challenge. But the day of is a breeze. He'll get something that will knock him out, maybe not totally, but to a point that if he is awake he won't remember much. One of them I was conscious for, but sorta out of it but remember it and watched it on the TV, sorry TMI. Afterwards, they bring you to recovery, give you a little snack and drink, wait for the meds to wear off a bit and your on your way. The doc will talk to you and let you know his limitations for the day. Good Luck!!Chat Icon

Re: Anyone ever have a colonoscopy?

Lucky me-- I have had several.

You'll want to eat right after since you will not have eaten for 24+ hours prior to the proedure. You will be very tired and groggy from anesthsia. Each doc puts you out different;y- I have woken up in the middle of it, and other times I just wake up and can't believe it's over- either way, you feel nothing. You will be pretty gassy right after since you are filled with so much air as a result of the procedure.

The prep is the worst- the procedure itself is really no big deal.

I took my mom in for one. The prep is drinking some really nasty stuff I believe every hour for the day before...It makes you go til there is nothing left in you...A miserable day. She had general anesthesia.

the prep is the worst part. You are knocked out for it, light sedation. after my dr. gives you a bagel to eat. i was so full of air and felt so bloated i had trouble getting it down, they keep you there awhile after to make sure you're ok. good luck
