Oh yeah. This is one of the coldest winters in years. So I'm not surprised.

How many months do you pay for oil as I always wondered the comparison of money of paying as needed to budget, paying 12 months?

We pay about $2,400/year for an 1,100 sq. ft house

I was very much dreading this, but we luckily converted to propane - and we've saved a tremendous amount of money (DH works for the company and we do get a little discount). I think maybe more people should look into that option as well?

Yup. My bill doubled for January. We had new windows installed. Hoping it makes a difference.

I heat my home with a pellet stove and I use so little oil that we have been dropped by a few oil companies.
I use about a tank of oil the entire season, if that.
We really only use oil for hot water.
It was seriously the best decision/investment we ever made.
I highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you have a ranch or a smaller home.

My parents did this and are pleased with the results.

My sister lives in PA and keeps running out of oil because of the cold.

I am so, so happy we have gas!

I always recommend to people who are house hunting to consider this.

Re: Anyone else using a tons of oil this winter?

Geez! how do you guys even BUDGET for something that expensive? Holy cramolies! $500 a month for heat?

Even if it were averaged out to $2400 a year or $200 a month that isn't electric that's just heat? Chat Icon

Beginning to wonder why I ever wanted to buy a house out in NY and feeling very grateful I couldn't afford the mortgage. That is ASTOUNDING!

So what is the average monthly utilities water, light and gas/oil?

I feel very guilty for complaining about the house always being so cold and that I had to wear layers and layers under blankets to get comfy. I never paid for oil. Though once my landlord said they had to up the rent because it was a cold winter the year before, I didn't bat an eye and just paid up.

Seriously feel for you guys. My brain would pop from stress.

I'm on balanced billing and our bill for gas is $81 a month.

I don't know how the average joe affords the huge oil bills!

We looked into this option. My neighbor loves her pellet stove and uses minimal oil. They have a 1 story ranch. We have a small house but it's 3 levels and were told it wouldn't work for us- but we did convert to natural gas. We haven't gotten a bill yet but I think we spent $500 a month on oil during the cold months.

Anyone else using a tons of oil this winter?

Just bought a house with oil heat. We aren't even living there yet, just renovating and keeping the heat on 58 when we are not there and 62-64 when we are, and we have gone through over half a tank in 17 days. :( this is insane!

Re: Anyone else using a tons of oil this winter?

It is crazy. I keep a reserve account, so I put my self on like a balanced billing and then pull from that when oil bills are so high in winter.

Our house is tiny...and the sun (when it's out) shines in through the front windows all day long, which actually makes it warmer. We've been using more oil than usual, but not breaking the bank....last year we literally only filled up 3 times. We do COD oil delivery. I've never been more thankful to have such a small house as I am this winter! Chat Icon

Praying for a warm early spring regardless!!

Yes it's crazy! We have a $ 600 bill waiting to be paid and they are due to come fill up again Chat Icon killing my budget, we can't convert to gas Bc there are no lines here. My neighbor has some kind of pellet stove and the smell churns my stomach when they use it. Do they all smell like that?

That might be wood burning.
My pellets don't smell at all and I'm very very sensitive to smells like that.
I can't even be outside when people are burning bonfires or fire pits because it gives me a massive headache.

No, but we keep our house cool. I hate a warm, hot house.

During the day - 64
At night - 62

We had an oil delivery the first week of December and then not again until the first week of February.

In the summer our gas bill is about $34 a month. If we balanced billed I think we would be at $72 per month based on my rough estimate of our monthly costs.

Yes, just oil. Electric bill is another $140, which I know is pretty cheap.
