I'm sure you already know you are safer in a plane then in a car or walking across and street. What happened to the Air France plane is a tragedy but the odds of that happening to any individual are so slim. You are more likely to be struck by lightening then be in a plane crash.

I've flown overseas more time then I can count without incident.

There is a great book called Ask The Pilot that I think is great for nervous flyers. Knowing how things work and what is going on can make the experience less scary.

Re: anyone else now scared to fly?

I am petrified of flying, i have never flown.
I was planning on going away for my 30th birthday to the french riviera on a cruise and flying airfrance.

I have since changed my mind.
I just can not do it.

Re: anyone else now scared to fly?

I've always been anxious about flying and now more than ever. But the things I have read have made me feel better. It just seems like there has been a cluster of crashes lately.Chat Icon

Logically I hear you, I understand the statistics. Sometimes logic doesn't apply when it comes to fear.

Re: anyone else now scared to fly?

I just came back from a trip to Poland, I heard about the crash while in Poland but hell I had to come back somehow... honestly, once I am on the plane I just let it be, dont think about it too much... and I actually enjoy flying... plus I know it is horrible but I think about it that way: crashes are so rare that it would be totally rare for another plane to crash again so soon after this one...

like someone else said, you are more likely to die in a car accident or get hit by lightning, or win the lottery than to die in a plane crash. it is still the safest way to travel. and frankly, the most practical if you plan on seeing the world.

I admit that I get nervous while flying, but I get over it. honestly, I get more scared these days just commuting back and forth to work. the idiots on our roads should be arrested for attempted murder! Chat Icon Chat Icon

ITA! I also am a firm believer that when it's your time, it's your time. you can't live your life being afraid of the what if's...especially when the chances of something like the Air France tragedy happening to you is sooo slim.

Re: anyone else now scared to fly?

I agree, I am terrified of flying. The thought of getting on a plane freaks me out, actually since 9/11. I know everyone says the chance of being in a plane crash is so small compared to a car crash for example, but the difference to me, is that while many people survive car accidents, if a plane goes down, the chance of surviving is almost zero. I know it's not good to let fear rule your life, so I know one day I'll get on a plane again, I know that rationally speaking it would probably be totally fine, but still, I think I'd need some strong meds to knock me out first.

I completely understand that. I really suggest you get that book because the more you know about the process of flying could help. It's easy to be freaked out by things we don't understand. I used to be a very nervous flyer and my husband is a private pilot. After flying with him a few times my fear pretty much disappeared. He would explain every noise and bump and what turbulence means, ect. It helped a lot. Good luck.

Here is a way to get real life perspective:

There have been 46,234 arrivals in the last 24 hours without incident, currently 4,986 airborne aircraft. Think about how many planes fly daily, weekly, yearly and how there is only a handful of tragic crashes each year.

This is an interesting site:

I've always been afraid to fly. I still do it though, otherwise I'd never see outside the tristate area!

Re: anyone else now scared to fly?

I have never been a fan of flying and my DH worked for Pan Am, we flew everywhere for free when he worked for them. I still didn't like it.When i did fly back then, the first thing i would do was order a Mimosa because it helped a little to calm me down. Since 9-11,Ii refuse to get on a plane or put my kids on one for that matter. I know the chances are slim, but since the unthinkable happened,i think nothing is safe anymore. We drove to Disney 3 years ago with three small DC and i thought I would pull my hair out. DH says if i ever want to take the kids back to Disney i have to get on a plane, because he's never doing THAT drive again Chat Icon .. can't sayI blame him.

Re: anyone else now scared to fly?

I always have a fear of flying and I have found the ultimate cure. Fly with someone who is more afraid than you LOL

When I was seven years old I flew for the first time with my mother. Through tears she kissed all of her children "goodbye" moments before take off and then loudly sobbed through her rosary. . .

I walked with/carried DH when he was just my boyfriend to our flight to Aruba. When we took off, he heard a loud noise and turned to me to tell me that he was going to die and would never forgive me for making him fly.

I also flew with im to St Lucia, and Florida. Both times he was so drugged on his anti-anxiety medication that I thought I would have to go into the men's room with him at the airport.

Flew with my mom again to Italy, she cried again and apologized for making me go with her before I got the chance to become a mother. Please tel me WHY am I flying with her again in a few months??

so yeah, while I am always nervvous - I can never freak out. I take a xanax once I am sitting in my seat. I say a few rosarys SILENTLY and I ask God to take care of me
