Anyone do their own newborn shoot?
Me and my SIL are taking my niece's newborn pics. We got some blankets and other props, and I watched some youtube videos on shooting newborns. Does anyone have any tips to share if they did their own? Thanks!

Anyone do their own newborn shoot?
If you have a space heater and a white noise machine. Our photog used both and dd was like a dream during the long shoot....

Make sure she is well fed.
Use the room with the most natural light.
Patience.
Make sure house is warm and quiet.

I agree with what others posted, heater and natural light are your friends. Also, make sure your flash is off.
I knew that DS was the happiest and easiest in the morning so thats when i did my shoot.

I'd say before committing to doing this yourself , just remember you may still be in pain recovering and there will be a limit to how much you will be able to move around. Beyond that, I have no suggestions. Good luck!!!!

Just remember that a lot of the shots you see online are composites (multiple images merged together) to ensure the safety of the baby.

Thanks - I watched a youtube on that. I can get photoshop, but I don't know how to use it! I might try to get a few images to have the option of layering them!

I did my own. They came out ok, not fantastic. But my favorite shot if all was DS in a book shelf. I love that picture!

Don't let the baby sleep for 2-3 hours before the shoot and feed right beforehand. The baby is best when just fed and sleepy so you can pose her more easily.

I think the fact that you're researching ahead will help a lot. We did our own and just kind of winged it. We got some good shots but nothing spectacular. I knew I wasn't going to do any pro shots (still haven't) so I was happy with whatever we got. I didn't really research and wish I had. For example, we did it at 2 weeks old and I didn't realize what a difference it makes to do them right away. We did wait for the time of day with the best natural light and cranked up the heat. We just had fun with it.

Thanks. Baby will be 6 days old when we do it. Hopefully my research pays off! There is a lot of pressure since it is not my baby - if they don't come out good I will feel terrible!

I take pretty good pictures. Not necessarily professional quality, but not bad at all. My pictures just seemed very one dimensional for the most part. I think that's because I don't know that much about lighting.

DH knows more about the cameras then me but I will say we just got a new lens for christmas that is awesome in low light. I can ask him the specifics when he gets home if you want.

Take a few test pictures with or without the baby before you make an ISO decision. You dont really want it as low as possible unless you have a lot of light

As Michelle mentioned, many shots are composites. Unless you are experienced, don't even bother with those ones. Compositing isn't easy either. It's really not as easy as just tossing layers together.
You can get MANY really good pictures without putting baby in any danger.
Don't shoot up the baby's nose.
Get detail shots: hands, feet, hair, face, lips, full body etc
Get some of baby awake, some sleeping.
Use your light properly. You can get a big piece of white foam board to use as a reflector if you don't have one. You want your main light to be natural light. Turn the lights off in the room, mixed lighting will create color casts.

Turn the flash off.
Watch your focal points. Make sure baby's eyes are the focal point, or hand, foot etc. If you can, practice in the meantime on shooting manual and choosing focal points. You want to keep your shutter speed at about 125 or higher. Find out how your camera does with noise (what ISO does the noise make the picture look like garbage? What ISO looks best etc) You generally want to keep the aperture more open. If you put it on Auto, sometimes it will slow the shutter speed down too much on you and you could get blurry pics. If you aren't that comfortable shooting full manual, try shooting in shutter priority, so that you can control it and not let it get too slow on you.
