Anyone attend Catholic Mass?
How do you volunteer to bring up gift to the altar (aka Communion)? Do you need to be asked by the priest?

In my church the ushers ask people on the way in if they would like to do it that day.
You can probably approach an usher and ask if anyone has volunteered that day and if not ask if you can do it

Same in my church. You can just ask and they're usually fine with it since they randomly pick people most of the time anyway

The Ushers randomly pick people before Mass begins. But you can get there early and ask the Usher if you can do it.

In my church they had to take a class or meeting of some sort. Then whoever is at the mass at that time can volunteer.

Yes, and in our parish, if you have special circumstances (we just had a baby and want to show thanks etc) you can call ahead and let them know you want to do it. Then, when you get there, you tell the ushers who you are.

At our parish, you write your name(s) in a book that's in the church lobby/narthex. The pastor asks you let an usher know you're there when you arrive for mass.

maybe they are thinking of the Eucharistic minster that helps give out the communion..that you would need classes for.
in our church, there is stand with the gifts on it like 1/3 way up the aisle (which i find annoying that you have to walk around it) and usually whomever sits near it will be asked.

My church, the ushers ask a family in the beginning. As a kid I DREADED having to do it, they always asked us.
