Any mothers here asked to work part-time?
How did your employer take the news that you want to work part-time? Did they allow it?
Just curious 'cus I would really prefer to work part-time and am wondering how to ask my new employer...
TIA!

Re: Any mothers here asked to work part-time?
I did ask to go part time after my DD was born and they said no (I worked for a large corporate company), however they did let me work 2 days from home. Once my DS was born I asked again, because working from home wouldn't work out anymore. Again they said no.
I ended up resigning and taking a part time job somewhere else.
Good luck

Re: Any mothers here asked to work part-time?
I decided the week before going back to work that I wanted to work PT. My boss was less than pleased since I was re-orged into a new group 2 weeks before going out on leave and I took an extended leave too. We had never worked together before and he had 2 people leave while I was out and another that was leaving when I came back. In the end, he relucantly agreed since for me FT wasn't an option and I was going to resign if it wasn't approved. (He didn't know that though). In the end, I was allowed to chose which days I wanted to work. So now I work Mon, Tues and Thurs.
It doesn't hurt to ask.
ETA: I think my boss was dragging his feet because he thought I might change my mind about being home with DD 2 days a week.

Re: Any mothers here asked to work part-time?
I went to 3 days in the office and 2 days a week at home, but I had been with the organization 10 years before asking. I wrote up a plan and presented it to my boss--I knew they wouldn't allow part-time, because of the amount of work that needed to be done, but they agreed to the 2 days a week from home since my work is really not tied into 9-5--I can work on it nights and weekends when DH is home.
JMO but you say a "new" job--I wouldn't ask if you were just hired. You have nothing to lose, but I think it sounds pushy if you haven't proven yourself with the company and are already asking for accomodations.

I asked to work three days a week and was told I couldn't. I understand why I can't but I was still upset.

I would love to go part time but my company does do it. I can pretty much come and go as I please since I'm in management.

Re: Any mothers here asked to work part-time?
Thanks ladies, I think I'll wait a month or two before asking to work one day at home. Maybe that's more negotiable than asking for a full day off.

Re: Any mothers here asked to work part-time?
I went PT after my son was born 5 years ago. At first I was doing some work from home, but after he got too mobile, I couldn't get as much done. Since my DH works most weekends and has a day off during the week, I have been working 1 day a week in the office. Now that I have 2 kids, that one day a week is my peace!
People have asked me why even bother with one day a week, since I am essentially a SAHM. Well, first, the money is excellent, two, I want to keep current in my field (engineering) and three because I have a professional license I want to maintain. Most of all, my company is very good to me, they still give me fiscal year and Christmas bonuses, they have given me a raise every year, even though I work very PT and I still get to participate in 401K and profit sharing.
finding PT work to work with *my* schedule would be virtually impossible anywhere else. So I am very lucky.

Re: Any mothers here asked to work part-time?
when i found out i was preg there was a pt position avail on the evenings which i was working over nights... my boss apparently wasnt happy as she went and offered the position to 4 people who were more senior until one of them took it and i eventually had no choice but to go per diem... but she is a piece of work... i tried to explain to her that i needed eves or days because dh can be switched to a different shift at any time... ps right before i was about to go back he go switched to overnights... got the notice on friday and had to be in on monday... she was "shocked" and i just said to her that i knew that was going to happen which was why i had asked for a different shift....

Re: Any mothers here asked to work part-time?
I would love to work PT but the "bigwigs" at my job are not understanding at all. And I KNOW I can do alot of it from home.
I would never ask. They dont even approve my vacation time so they would never let me work less. They apparently cant get by without me here
