How do you manage daycare/child care? Especially for children under 1?

Where do you live?

Where in the city do you work - how far from Penn?

How do you manage?

We are in queens now but hoping to move to the island for space and quality of life but I'm not sure how we will manage if all daycares close at 6!

We would have been, but I decided not to go back to work : ) What we would have done is one of us go to work earlier and do the pick up and one go later and drop off. Either that, or my mom would have picked up and watch her for a while.

We are a dual working family that has to leave to work super early.

We had our moms helping out... And just got a nanny for part time.

You are smart to think ahead and work this out into your calculations.

Our friends in this situation have nannies.

One friend we have has a live in nanny and they are enjoying it very much. These parents have more date nights than any other parents we know since they have live in help.

We were. I work near grand central and dh worked downtown. DS would go early to daycare. We took a 657. Dh now works on LI so dh drops off at730. I have alway done pick up. I take a 424 home. My boss was great to let me be a bit flexible

Re: Any Dual Commuting (To City) Families

DH and I both communted to NYC from LI for work during DS' 1st year. I left earlier and arrived later. Bc of my schedule, DH always left work at 5. What made a huge difference for us was that it was my parents who cared for DS FT Mon-Fri so there was less stress associated with pick-up/drop off. It wasn't an easy year but definitely doable.

I worked at NYU Langone hospital so all the way across town from Penn and DH works on Wall St.

ETA: Live south shore nassau so actual time on the LIRR was 40-42 minutes. I had to take a bus across town and DH took the subway to Wall.

My daycare is open 630 to 630. I'm going to be dropping her off and taking the 655 and I have to get the 501 to get her in time. If I'm running late we will have a back up person to pick her up bf the 630 close.

We both work in NYC - I commute M-Th and Dh is in the Bronx with a rotating schedule. I work downtown and live in Rockland County.

We found a daycare with extended hours in the morning and evening. We just do late pick up though. If I drop off, I get them in at 7 and am at my desk around 850. If I pick up, I leave at 450 and get them at 615. I don't do drop off often though.

It's difficult in the beginning until you get a routine down but gets better. I'd love to not have to commute though - I have one day to work from home, would love two.
