Any border collie lovers out there?

My husband and I have been debating wheter or not to keep our 3 yr old border collie. He is a great dog, very sweet and loving, housebroken and friendly, but he is not getting the attention or excersize he needs or deserves and is starting to seems sad lately. He is great with other dogs but we think he can have a much better life with someone familiar and dedicated to the breed. We are also expecting and are quite nervous witht he excitement level around a baby. I will post a pic. I will not give him up with out knowing 100% he would go to the right home. Please let me know if anyone is interested or knows anyone who might be. Thanks! Chat Icon

aww---he's so cute!

i just wanted to say that don't give up on him just yet! he might seem sad because believe it or not, animals can sense change and he might be reacting to your pregnancy. sometimes dogs and cats can go thru mood changes when you're pregnant. i'm sure he would be great around the baby....its amazing how dogs can know the difference when its a baby or child and probably will become quite protective of your little one.

hope you can keep the whole family together!

Re: Any border collie lovers out there?

me...me...me. I have a border collie. I LOVE my dog. I struggled with giving him up when he was younger also...becuase I was at work all day and he needed SO much attention and exercise. I looked into a farm in Pennsylvania. (i aslo had trouble with him getting out of my yard and he had to be tied up all day). Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would LOVE to take in your dog, but I already have 2 dogs and another set of four-legs running arouond my house would just NOT work.

I wish I had someone who could take him. I LOVE border collies. They are so cute and so smart.

Good Luck. Chat Icon

Have you considered a dog walker? I have a very active dog as well, I actually use a laser light sometimes and she chases it. It really wears her out!
Please don't give up on him yet- think of how sad he'll be Chat Icon

We used a trainer whose own dogs are border collies. Maybe he can help. HIs name is Rick Pisani. Rick's Canine Workshop

Re: Any border collie lovers out there?

No offense, but I think this is a rather irresponsible decision of you and your DH.

Three years ago, when you got your dog, you made a committment to him and NOW you feel like he's not getting enough attention and is sad? That just doesn't seem fair or right to the dog IMO. I think you need to figure out how to make time for the dog.

There are alternatives to giving up your dog. You could hire a dog walker, bring him to doggy day care. Heck, you could even just carve out 20 or 30 minutes a day to walk him. Try and have some interaction with the dog... These options could help with the situation.

Good luck, I hope you can figure out a solution to this problem.

Re: Any border collie lovers out there?

I am sorry to hear you have gotten to the point of giving him up. I will ask around.

However, I really feel with some time and patience you will be able to keep this wonderful dog you committed yourself to three years ago.

My husband is great with dogs and we have a Border Collie who was very neurotic in the beginning. I just asked him and he would be happy to help you and your DH work with your dog. It does take committment from the two of you. Let me know if you are interested. Maybe he could meet up with your DH at a dog park. I doubt I will make it because I am due in six weeks myself.
