Anxiety over weaning from bottle to cup

We just had Jordan's one year appt and ped told us to change to cup from bottle now! I literally almost cried. I thought we still had some time for this. His bedtime bottle is our special time. How am I going to do that with a cup? Will he even be able to go to sleep now? Just looking foe advice and maybe some hugs. I'm so sad

Our ped said to do it gradually so that's what we're doing. He is great with the sippy for water, not so much for formula/milk.

I am going to replace the nighttime bottle last. I'm going to work with the daytime ones first.

On a good note - we're happy to be getting rid of bottles because DS has figured out how to make them squirt people!

I got rid of it daily and went to just a nightly bottle. Wasn't until 2, I dropped that to a sippy only. Really I could have done it around 15m.

I agree with PP, pick your battles.

DS is 21 months and I'm still slowly weaning. I'm having a hard time taking the bottle away for some reason. My goal is March right before he's 2.

DS just had his 15 month check up today and the dr said that at 18 months he should be on all sippys. He gets 2 sippys a day with water/juice. I am transitioning him to milk now, so I am going to wait until he is on all milk before ditching his daytime bottles. I will keep the night time bottle for a while longer..

Re: Anxiety over weaning from bottle to cup

You never know, he may take well to them - DD did. She didn't like regular sippys, but once we went to the straw sippy, she liked them - we used them during the day at first and then a couple of days in, her last cup was almost done before bedtime (she starts it with dinner). It didn't seem worth it to put it in a bottle so I didn't and she was fine - didn't even seem to notice so we went with it and now she's off bottles completely. I will say though, she is now much more attached to her pacifier so we're not completely out of the woods yet! Not ready to get rid of that yet though I am trying to limit it as much as I can. We'll see what my ped has to say about that tomorrow!

My ped said that 18 months was absolutely fine..she said there is no document reason to rush a baby off a bottle at 12 months. Obviously solids should be a large part of their diet so the milk should be less at this age, but i see no prob with a morning/night bottle. Johnny took a bottle till 19 months, i had no reservations about it and ry still gets a nighttime bottle. I'm sure like his brother, he'll be done with it soon!

Re: Anxiety over weaning from bottle to cup

DS was off the bottle by 11 months and DD at 13 months is off the bottle. I started replacing her morning bottle with a sippy b/c its when she's most hungry and figured she would drink out of anything. Did that for a week until she got used to it, then replaced 2nd bottle again for one week and then bedtime bottle was last. I think the thought of it is harder than the process. I just wanted to do it before they were old enough to miss it. I was on a bottle until kindergarden Chat Icon
I refused to do that to my kids

Re: Anxiety over weaning from bottle to cup

The ped kept telling me that his teeth will rot - or some crap like that - if he's drinking milk out of a bottle. I don't get it though - he does not get a bottle to just lay around with and suck on, the bottle is not in the crib with him so what is the difference whether he is drinking milk out of a bottle nipple or a sippy cup straw?Chat Icon

I have heard that it will eventually affect how they come in, but have not heard anything about cavities. As between cup or bottle, I think either could rot their teeth, but that's why I started using tooth wipes at night - after she's done with her cup, I wipe down her teeth. I found them online at diapers.com. I also started using a finger brush and some apple-flavored toothpaste in the bath (also from diapers.com).

If I drink soda from a straw, some still gets on my teeth so I brush them... what your ped said sounds weird to me too Chat Icon

ETA: I've been thinking more about this - I just don't see how a cup v. a bottle would be better for cavities. I think either way, you have to wipe down their teeth in some way before you put them down, no? Eventually, I'm going to take the nighttime cup out of the bedtime routine (so no food post bath and brushing), but I'm done with changes for now, so I clean her teeth again instead. She didn't like it at first, but does fine with it now.

I remember having the same fears. The bedtime bottle was the last one I got rid of because of the same concerns.

We would give him a sippy but very quickly that stopped. What started was a fantastic routine where we read 2 stories and then talked about his day. The first week we had to CIO but after that it was wonderful.

It's been our routine ever since. We read (or do flash cards) and then talk about his day except now he adds to the story Chat Icon
