Antibody Testing

Has anyone done this or plan to do it? I know this past week they started offering this to everyone at certain urgent care walk-in places. So many people (like me) feel like they already had the virus and want to know for sure. They take 1 vial of blood and give you results in a few days. I was just curious if anyone who thought they may have had it got the test and whether they were right?!

I honestly wouldn't want to be in any urgent cares right now. I feel like if I didn't already have it, i would once I left.

Antibody Testing

You can get it just by asking for it? I assumed you had to be selected at random, but if it is open to anyone, I would like to go. I am convinced I had it in February. I wonder if City MD has it. Also, not sure how we would ever know if it was right- since so many have it with no symptoms.

not really sure what the point is if now they are saying there is a chance you could still get it again.

Re: Antibody Testing

I saw a FB advertisement from afc in west Islip. They have antibody tests at that location by appointment only.

I want to get it, but may wait a little to see if I can just get it done w a script at a lab from my PCP. I feel like from what I’ve heard, these labs have a good system going. 1 person at a time, lab tech in Full PPE and you are in and out really quick. You only interact w your tech

Yes anyone can ask for it. It's not a question of availability of corona testing supplies because it's just a regular vial of blood.

Fair point, but I would wear a mask and gloves and immediately go home and strip and shower.

Yeah, I know, well they say they that they don't really know yet if you can or can't. I think it's like other viruses, you probably will have "some" immunity but maybe not full immunity since it mutates. Kind of like the flu - the shot is rarely that effective but they claim it makes the symptoms less severe. But I'd still like to know if I had it - at least I'd know that I got through it once.

If I had it. I waa asymptotic because I haven't been sick at all in a very long time.
Not even anything mild.
So for me, it's not really a priority right now.
Maybe in the futute

Same about the priority. I shouldn’t leave the house but you want me to go to urgent care to get a test I don’t need? My family can’t get our teeth cleaned but I should rush to get an antibody test at an Urgent Care facility?

And if the government needs this testing so bad , they have to make the test more easily accessible. Seems hypocritical to me.

I know. Dh had his physical canceled, DD can't get her dental appt, I see ladies on here on the other thread who literally JUST had cancer and can't see their doctors for an exam, but we should go to a germ ridden urgent care?
I don't like going in those places during the best of times.
It is kind of hypocritical.

Maybe so those people that test positive would consider donating plasma?

If you have antibodies you may be able to donate plasma which seems to be helping people recover.

Yes, I’ve never been to an Urgent Care facility and don’t plan on going to one now to get tested when we should be “Quarantined”.

My son and I had a teeth cleaning scheduled that was cancelled, luckily he has good enamel so I’m not too concerned. But DH deep cleanings were cancelled. Which may not seem like a big deal, but he has bad teeth, they are bleeding and he is in pain. They said if he didn’t continually keep up with his cleanings he would need dentures or implants. So I am worried about it. He’s already terrified of the dentist and paranoid about the virus. My nieces orthodontist totally ghosted my sister, so all that money they put in will be wasted if this goes on for months.

And like you said this doesn’t even scratch the surface, the stories on here about cancer survivors and those that need treatments. I feel angry and sad when I hear this, but let me rush to leave my house and go to Urgent Care to get an antibody test.

Re: Antibody Testing

Wow tough crowd, sorry I asked! I think it is horrible that people are not able to get dental, cancer, and other treatments they need right now. But that is not because of people getting an antibody test. It is because the governor only cares about Covid patients. And further, the governor is the one that wants the antibody testing done!

Ha ha.... I’m not being tough just giving my honest & raw opinion. You asked would anyone get it and I would not at this point. I was just being honest of why I wouldn’t since I knew if I said No, people would ask why.

The test isn’t easily accessible for me to get one, so I won’t. And I think the way the test are being administered is very hypocritical.

Nothing wrong with you asking.
I think antibody testing is a good thing. I just find it ironic and hypocritical that they want people to leave their homes and go to an urgent care office to get it, when you aren't able to get routine medical care because they are so afraid of this virus.

I haven't seen anywhere where 'they' want us to now go get an antibody test. Cuomo has always said they dont have enough tests so they don't want people lining up to get tests for no reason.

I believe they are coordinating antibody tests for medical, MTA, police, front line workers, etc. at their places of employment so that they can decide if/when they can go back to work. (That is a different discussion if that is valid.)

I didnt see any info around the AFC Urgent Cares having antibody testing. They have the regular rapid diagnostic test which is different from the antibody testing.

Re: Antibody Testing

I think antibody testing is informative but dangerous as those who have antibodies will assume a false sense of protection.

1. We don’t know if antibodies give us immunity and if so how long it would last
2. We don’t know exactly what titer of the antibody gives us any immunity of at all and how long
3. We don’t know if the antibody protects against all or specific strains

We do benefit from antibody testing to select plasma for testing and treatment options, but that is still at trial stage.

So maybe that is the "they"

My daughter went for the COVID test at AFC Urgent care and she said you could not pay her to step foot in there again. They did in inside, were overbooked and sick people were standing practically on top of each other coughing, they were having people sign forms using the same pen! If you don't have it walking in there, you will when you leave.

I would love to get the testing done cause I believe I may have had it in December. I was sick for 2 full weeks with a lot of the symptoms, the dr diagnosed me with an URI and my whole office was sick at the same time with the same symptoms. My Dh ended up getting it too from me but his symptoms were nit as severe as mine. It’s just a very strange coincidence to me.
But at this time, I am not walking into an urgent to get the test. I would prefer to go to one of the pop up outdoor sites provided by the state, but I’m not going out of my way to get it done.
