antibiotics and doing the deed!

DH and I are not TTC yet.........

I am on antibiotics this week and it says on the package that it could lower the effect of the pill. Does it really impact the effect to such a high percentage that we should use an extra method of birth control? ........... I should add that if we did get a BFP it wouldn't be the end of the world........ but of course my preference is to not get it yet!

Any knowledge about this would be helpful! Chat Icon

Re: antibiotics and doing the deed!

I don't have a "vaild" answer, but I've taken plenty of antibiotics over the past few years (I teach Kindergarten and am always coming down with something!), and have never used any backup. That being said...the pamphlet that comes with the meds says use backup...so there must be some people who get preggers that way! I have also heard that it affects your BCP for the entire rest of your cycle, so I guess it would depend on where you are...if you are past possible O days, then maybe you are safe...if it's early on, maybe not. Sorry if this didn't help at all!!!

Re: antibiotics and doing the deed!

no, actually that IS helpful because I didn't know it disrupts you for the whole cycle!

I am now also wondering ..if you or anyone else know....

If I did get pregnant and continued to take the pill, not knowing that I got pregnant yet........ would that not be safe? Figure I would be expected to get AF in 2 weeks so I wouldn't be taking the pill for very long after anyway... I know this is a BIG "IF"!

I know this is late...
but you can ask your pharmacist this question.

It does depend on the particular antibiotic... but yes... if you are NOT TTC... take back-up.
