Antibacterial hand soaps?
Do you use them? I know it's not supposed to be good for you, but I always thought I was using one. Well, DH picked a different kind when he couldn't find our refills and we've been using it for months. I had to pick up some more and I realized it's not antibacterial. Maybe it's a good thing for my pregnancy, but I'm thinking for winter when new baby will be here, I want that antibacterial protection. Wondering what others are using, especially new moms.

I use antibacterial hand soap, but I just read about a FDA ban.

edit: I thought I was using antibacterial soap, but its not! lol. Its hand soap from bath and body works.

I think they actually just banned it so you probably won't be able to get it much longer anyway.
Regular hand soap is fine.
When I am ultra paranoid- like with a newborn or if someone is sick in my house- or after riding the subway  - I use alcohol based hand sanitize- like they have in the hospitals

I don't. Dh says it's not good to have anything antibacterial going down the drains so we avoid them whenever possible. There are some pretty bad viruses that are resistant anyway. They say hot water and the friction of rubbing your hands together works better.

I don't use antibacterial soaps. I don't even like hand sanitizers. I just use regular hand soap and water. If I'm out, then I'll use hand wipes.

I feel like it's alcohol though- and alcohol kills most everything.
That's why I feel better using it over just soap and water.

That's why I feel better using it over just soap and water.
I used to keep the hand wipes with alcohol in my bag, but I stopped buying those because I thought the alcohol was bad for kids...

When my daughter was in PICU, the nurses said that the alcohol sanitizer is ok to use on occasion but simple hand washing was most effective and should be the primary source of sanitizing.

Yes this is what OSHA says as well. Hand sanitizer is good for when you don't have access to soap and water. And washing your hands for 20 seconds kills mostly everything! (That's what OSHA told us)

Antibacterial hand soaps?
The other thing with antibacterial hand soap is that it doesn't instantly sanitize. You would have to be washing for about 10 minutes for it to actually disinfect anything. I learned in medical microbiology that the only thing antibacterial soap does is keep bacteria from growing in the soap itself. That and it contributes to antimicrobial resistance. I haven't used it in years and I'm a germaphobe. Additionally, triclosan (the ingredient commonly used in these soaps) is said to be a hormone disrupter. No thank you!
Plain soap and water is best. I only use purell if I have access to nothing else and only knock offs if they're actually 70% alcohol.

100% this. I only use sanitizer when I'm out and about and then I scrub my hands the second I walk in the door.

I also saw once that certain toothpastes have triclosan in them.
I think it was Colgate Total Care, not 100% sure but it's on the label.
They said to avoid that one as well.
