Re: ANOTHER TIP Q

yes, ususally 20%. The bill is usually low anyway, so a few extra bucks I don't mind. They keep you refilled and the table clean. That is what matters.

I tip at buffets, maybe 10% for bringing beverages and clearing away plates.

Re: ANOTHER TIP Q

I just see it as other than taking your order, what more does a regular restaurant do for you?

I can guarentee that the waitstaff gets paid the same amount as a regular restaurant.

Waitresses and waiters in a restaurant make an average of #3.00 per hour. Buffet service workers make at least minimum wage. There's a big different in the pay scale.

I have never worked in a buffet place, but are you sure that they get minimum wage? I know Shoneys workers only get service salary, they are buffet plus.

From my experince, yes, they should be getting at least minimum wage. There isn't an expectation of a tip like there is when you wait tables.

Re: ANOTHER TIP Q

Shoneys is not only buffet. As for tipping at a buffet place we do a dollar per drink ordered.

Re: ANOTHER TIP Q

so you have worked at a buffet?

At 16, I waited tables at Shoneys...they did a breakfast bar that most people got. I only was paid 2.13 an hour.

next time I go to one I will have to ask what they make.

ETA: but I guess for the 5.00 I hate to take the chance of stiffing someone

I usually tip 10% for buffets. Normally I tip 15-20% at restaurants.

ETA: I have never gone to a buffet at dinner, only breakfast/brunch, so no drinking beyond 1 glass of OJ. If I was drinking alcohol or lots of soda, it would be different.

No, I have only worked in restaurants that did table service. However, while looking for a job a couple of times, I did interview at a buffet restaurant and it was always minimum wage.

Re: ANOTHER TIP Q

I only once ever ate at a buffet, it was a lobster/crab buffet in florida, and the waiter was right there whenever our beers were running low, or to bring a fresh bowl for the shells...we tipped 25%--that's my minimum, I worked as a waitress, and my father was a cab driver and a bartender...I never tip lower than 25% for any kind of service job....

Re: ANOTHER TIP Q

I don't do buffets in general, but I always tip over 20% provided that the service (whatever it may be) was good. I have worked in the service industry since I was 15 yrs. old and just feel guilty tipping less. I know that at some places the servers are making minimum wage, but that still isn't much.

Re: ANOTHER TIP Q

Besides the Chinese buffets, I didn't even know buffet style restaurants existed. (I mean, aside from Sizzler, I guess if you are considering that to be a buffet restaurant???)
