Another spinoff to pacifiers...

Last night I called my mom to tell her how excited I was that we went a day and bedtime without the pacifier and she sounded upset...

so I asked her why she sounded that way and she said that she "felt sad for Emily."

I couldn't believe my ears. She went on to say that babies have the natural urge to s*ck and that it doesn't go away until they are closer to 2 (she was a LLL leader for 30 years) and that it's too early---that she still needs that comfort.

Meanwhile me and my sibs NEVER had pacifiers --- but we were breastfed into the toddler years....

I wasn't expecting to hear that from her at all! Do you think I'm doing it too soon? She's afraid Emily is going to substitute her thumb for the paci but she's NEVER sucked on her thumb yet and she's a year old.

I stopped giving Alex the paci at 5 months. I think with the next one I will wait until they are closer to 1 year. I was so paranoid about it becoming a habit and him having it at kindergarten.

My mil said the same thing because Gianna never took to a paci, and now she doesn't take the bottle much, but she does get frustrated at times when I put her down to bed, and sometimes when I finally calm her down she does take the bottle and falls asleep..

Not at all. If Emily is not "missing" it, then I think you did the right thing. Both my kids gave up the paci at 4 months old. Granted Andrew sucked his thumb until he was 16 months, but Lauren has no desire for the paci and rarely scuks her thumb. I am a firm believer in getting rid of the paci as soon as its possible.

Dont go back. You're already one day in. You're doing the right thing. If it's comfort she wants snuggle her.

While I agree with your mom I say if she's not missing it then apparently the sucking isn't an issue for her and just go with it. I think this falls into the not all babies are the same category and maybe she's at a stage where she is perfectly fine giving it up. You have great instincts and you would know if she was truly upset without it. I think you're doing fine.
