Re: Another Spinoff to Breast feeding....

probably 8-10 months

ETA: I will add cereal and start to wean her around 7 months. Depending on how the weaning goes 8-10 months.

I had hoped to breastfeed for 1-2 years (until DD self weaned) but it did not work out that way and I am still very sad about this but glad that she got as much breastmilk as she did given our situation.

Well, how long until they can eat solids? I'm shooting for around that time.

Re: Another Spinoff to Breast feeding....

I don't want to sound ignorant here....but i know people who breast fed until their child was just under 3 years old. In my opinion, i think its very odd. For the kid to be actually lifting your shirt over your head and baring a full set of teeth was just weird to me. I couldn't do it.

It doesn't mean i think breastfeeding is unnatural or wrong-I plan to do it myself, but i just do not understand the plus 2 years old thing. I would think a good cut off time would be a year??

Well you might feel different after you have a baby or you might not. I felt the same way until I had her and even as she grows I always look at her as my baby and I could easily see nursing her as a 2-3 year old if that is something that she wanted and needed.

Re: Another Spinoff to Breast feeding....

I don't know, probably 4 months, no more than 6 months. That's if I decide to stick with it at all. I am going to try it for a few weeks so I can make an educated decision, but I still feel a little weird. I'm also not going into it with any pre-conceived ideas about how long or even IF I'll be able to because every baby is different.

They start solids between 4 - 6 months but they will need to continue to drink (and in fact get most of there nutrition from) formula or BM for the 1st year. After 1 year, they can start on cow's milk.

I was figuring at least 6 mos and then take it from there. Maybe up to a year. We'll see how it goes.

i think we find it *weird* b/c society has told us it is *weird* in many other countries, women breastfeed for 2-3 years b/c other nutrition isn't as good as breast milk.

I have read that up to two years is the absolute best for the child, although I am not sure I'd be able to do that (i'll be lucky if I can make it through 1 or 3 monhts).

I'd like to do it up until the child is eating solids... the way I see it, the longer I can keep chemicals/genetically engineered foods, etc out of the child, I will.

Re: Another Spinoff to Breast feeding....

I initially was only going to do it until Caiden was 6 months, but then I did it until he was a year. Since Caiden was so big, I wasn't making enough milk, and when he started lifting my shirt up to eat, (very weird for me) I decided it was time to stop. I was very upset when we did though. It felt like he didn't need me anymore. But I got over that and now I'm all he wants! Chat Icon

I nursed Emma until she was 2 1/2. Babies have bottles with full sets of teeth, nothing wrong with having the boobie. What made me stop was being in the hospital with Jeremy nursing and Emma nursing at the same time. At 2 1/2 she was doing it MAYBE 1-2x a day. It was more of a habit, comfort thing, rather than for nutrition because she was eating table food and drinking from cups.

When you do have a baby and you say that you will stop breastfeeding at a year and that year actually comes you realize how little your baby still is. AAP says 2 years is best as long as mutually agreeable between mother and baby. Of course you have to do what is best for you and your family.Chat Icon

I still nurse my son and he is 13 months. I said that I wanted to do it until a year. He only nurses for comfort mostly at night and when he wakes up as I give him whole milk during the day.
I don't know how much longer we will be doing this but I reached my goal and I am very proud of myself.

Re: Another Spinoff to Breast feeding....

I still nurse my daughter 2 times a day at 17 months old. My goal was 1 year and thats when I stopped pumping (at work) and introduced cows milk to her. However she still nurses for comfort and security. Honestly I think you should be open minded until your baby is actually here, my opinion on so many topics changed once I was actually had the baby. When your little one turns 12 months old you will see they are still very much a baby. JMHO
