Re: another senior prom cancelled.

I saw this in the paper today. Chaminade is run by the same order of priests and brothers as Kellenberg HS, which has also cancelled its prom. Perhaps they decided to be a united front.

Well, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard! They'll probably just find an alterntive end of the year party that they throw for themselves and get just as wild.

Re: another senior prom cancelled.

i'm surprised that it took this long for Chaminde to follow suit. i agree that since they are both run by the marianist bros., they would stick together

Re: another senior prom cancelled.

i have to say i see their point.
These kids today are going crazy with these proms.

But that seems to be with everything these days. The sweet sixteens, the designer clothes, the cars etc etc.

But let's face it. This has been going on forever. People have been having after parties FOREVER.

AND to have limos to drive you around instead of driving IMO is the smartest and safest thing possible.

And i just don't think that the priests should be acting like parents....

I'm sure it'll be wilder than the prom would have been, and I hope they do, it's a rite of passage that we all had the opportunity to participate in, I remember how important it was to me and my friend our senior year.

It $ucks that everyone has to pay for the stupidity of others. Just because other kids throw wild parties it doesn't mean all the kids do it. I don't know, I don't think it's fair. Chat Icon

what were the other reasons? I know having the wild parties implicates people getting hurt or drunk driving. But was it soley based on the after party issue?

Re: another senior prom cancelled.

I think a lot was based on the kids trying to "out do" each other. At least that was one of the reasons the one principal (or head of the school or whatever) said when it was first announced a while ago. That it was all basically getting to be a show of "look what I have and you don't."

I feel a bad for the kids, but maybe if kids start to see this might happen, they'll tone it down a little at other schools. Unlikely, Yes, but I think they should. JMHOChat Icon

Re: another senior prom cancelled.

i know kellenberg cancelled b/c the school didn't want to sponsor orgies.

i think it has a lot to do with the parents who rent houses for these kids and supply alcohol.

it becomes bigger and bigger every year and the schools got sick of it

The statement that was issued when they cancelled the Kellenberg prom was that the administration and faculty overwhelmingly felt that the prom was contributing to a culture of excess that did not fall in line with the Christian values that the school tries to instill in its students. In addition to that, they said that the school had tried in the past to get parents involved in discouraging some of the drinking and afterparty events and that didn't work. The school also said that they no longer wanted to accept liability or sponsor the very event that facilitated the planning of the after parties. If the parents wanted to plan something on their own, that is their choice, but it will not be on school grounds.

I imagine the Chaminade decision was based on those reasons as well.

Re: another senior prom cancelled.

basically what this means is that now these kids will be just as wild, possibly wilder

but the school can't be tied to anything legally, should something happen

Re: another senior prom cancelled.

I am not sure if I agree with the decision, but I understand it. I have chaperoned proms in Catholic schools, and if those parents knew some of the stuff that goes on, they would be all over the administration for "allowing it." I think the school is taking a stand on something they see as intruding on the values they stand for.

The unfortunate thing, I think, is that the parents who are buying the booze and renting the houses in the hamptons are not the ones that will step up to organize another event. It will be the ones who just want their kids to have a prom. And then the rowdiness and liability will be their problem. Chat Icon

In that case, I would agree to cancelling the prom.

Re: another senior prom cancelled.

I feel it is the schools right not to sponser an event where drinking, drugs, sex and wild times prevail if it is not in their values.

I can't wait for one of these idiot parents to sponsor a "prom" type party and then be liable when there is underage drinking and drug use going on!
