Re: Another "patience pays off" before & after

Gorgeous!!! How long will those bloom for, and did you plant according to when certain flowers will be in bloom so you always have something blooming? Do you have a pic when they're dormant?

Sorry for the 20 questions. Want to do something just like this in my front and back yard.

Re: Another "patience pays off" before & after

I should mention that we use no fertilizers and no sprinklers. We dig a hole about 2 feet wide and deep and plant with the existing dirt in the bed mixed with compost. Water every 2 or 3 days the first season and after that just give them a big scoop of compost in spring and fall.

I don't use fertilizer because it's like steroids for plants and I feel that keeping them healthy is going to get you just as many flowers, and they will live a longer, stress-free life. Chat Icon

Daylilies can bloom for a month or more, Purple Coneflowers and Black Eyed Susans bloom for longer than that. You can't see them yet but there's a Caryopteris and Anemone that will flower in about a month or so.

I bought some more plants this year to fill in spots and make it larger and more interesting, because everything is pretty much the same height. I need some more variety in there. I don't have a complete dormant pic, but it's really uninteresting anyway during the winter. The only woody plants that keep branches in the winter are the Caryopteris and Butterfly Bush. Everything else just dies back (although I don't cut them back until spring because I like seeing the snow on them).

Here's one from last month, from a different angle. Lots of green back there. The corner has a lot of gaps because I just planted it last year, it will be much fuller next year.
