Another life taken by a stupid azz drunk driver
Rocky Point man held for DWI in fatal crash (06/21/09) STONY BROOK - Police have arrested a 66-year-old Rocky Point man for allegedly driving while intoxicated after he was involved in a head-on car crash that killed another man. The accident happened Saturday afternoon in Wading River, police say.
Suffolk County police say Michael Koss was driving a Jeep Cherokee westbound on Route 25A when he crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a Honda Civic.
The driver of the Honda, 61-year-old Edward Carr, and his 58-year-old passenger, Ilene Wasserman, were airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where Carr was pronounced dead.
Wasserman is in critical condition.
"Michael Koss, of Rocky Point, was traveling westbound on [Route] 25A just west of Gateway Drive in Wading River," says Seventh Squad Detective Sgt. James McGuinness. "He crossed over into oncoming traffic when he struck a car operated by a Mr. Edward Carr, of Setauket."
Koss and his two passengers, Serena Koss and Mary Lynch, were also taken to Stony Brook, where they are in serious condition.
Police charged Koss with DWI. He will be arraigned at a later date.

Re: Another life taken by a stupid azz drunk driver
I was just about to post this.
This was a former colleague... We did a lot of work with him in the place I used to work at. I presented at conferences with him. He was actually the other guy interviewed in the video clip I once posted where I was interviewed on autism and Thomas the Tank engine.
I am beyond devastated. This man did an immense amount of impact on the field and behavior.
Why don't these FUCK1NG drunk drivers ever die? That's what I want to know.

ITA. And when will the law actually make people pay the way they should for this selfish, indulgent crime? When will th epenalties finally be more than just a short stint in jail and then backto freedom and life as these "people" knew it?

Re: Another life taken by a stupid azz drunk driver
Two families lives are destroyed by a stupid decision. I can't even imagine that this guy is going to walk away from this accident and not feel anything but destroyed over this.
If the other driver died, would that make everyone feel better? I think that's pretty awful to say.
It's a horrible tragedy for everyone involved.

drunk driving is not an accident, it is a decision that you make. If anyone should pay for that decision, it is the dd, NOT an innocent driver.
eta - that is not to say that I do not feel for the dd's family or what the driver must be feeling / going through but I will save MOST of my sympathy for the victim's family

I agree with this.
the penal code needs to be re-written to include something like what they have in Texas "intoxication manslaughter"
I don't think "vehicular manslaughter" quite cuts it, b/c while there may not be an intent to kill, there is CERTAINLY a willful disregard for human life.
intoxication is not defense recognized under the law for murder charges, I don't see how it should mitigate a manslaughter charge in the least (right now, I believe NYS law views a death due to drunk driving as vehicular manslaughter in the second degree.)
the punishment just does not fit the crime.

I didn't say that drunk driving was an accident. In fact, I said it was a decision several times in my post. Bottom line is that an accident did happen as a result of the DECISION to drive drunk.
I don't condone drunk driving in anyway but to say a drunk driver should DIE is not called for.

Re: Another life taken by a stupid azz drunk driver
I just don't know how many lives it is going to take to have a ZERO tolerance for alcohol.
It's time to think outside the box.
Obviously whatever system is in place is NOT a deterent enough for people to stop drinking and driving.
I don't care if you are a repeated offender or you just did it once. Whether you hit someone or not. If you did not yet... you were just lucky! At this point, we need some real harsh penalties. I don't care if you are a bright young man/woman with a great future ahead of you. I don't care if you drank because your wife left you. NO MORE EXCUSES!!!! Time for no tolerance!!!!

I think wondering why Innocent people always seem to die as opposed to the person who CHOSE to get wasted with disregard for other drivers is indeed called for. let's agree to disagree on this one.

Re: Another life taken by a stupid azz drunk driver
for the families
People REALLY just don't get it. Just yesterday we were at a father's day bbq and one of the guests wanted to have some whiskey with the other guys. This guy knows that he has to drive home and we were telling him that he would be driving in a few minutes so he shouldn't drink, but he's all like "well, I know, but I always do this and I'm fine, bla bla". I looked him straight in the eye and said, "One day you won't be or worse, you will hurt or kill someone ELSE. You will NOT win this argument with me and we can go all day if you want. Think about all the families out on the road today. Why would you take that risk???"
He didn't drink and I'm really happy about that, but it made me feel like a jerk when everyone else backed off right when he said "oh I always do this and I'm fine". People JUST don't get it.

You're right, but I do agree that the penalties need to be more strict for DWI.
I feel so bad for the victim's family and pray that his passenger and the other passengers are able to pull through. I hope the other passengers think twice next time and don't get in a car with someone who's drunk.

I don't wish death on anyone. I didn't say that. But if someone makes a stupid decision like that, and someone dies as a result of it, it angers me that it is an innocent person getting in the car, expecting to get from point A to point B, and then never making it because of someone's decision to drink and drive.

that's what i wonder, as harsh as it may sound. the ones that cause the accident because of being drunk walk away with little more than a scratch.
my heart goes out to the gentleman's family and for full recovery of the other passanger
