Another Immunization Question...
Someone just mentioned she shouldn't have gotten 4 shots at one time, that they should have been broken up. (Something about autism?) Has anyone else heard of this?

Re: Another Immunization Question...
The only reason Ive ever heard of breaking up the shots is not to overload the immune system. Although they are getting the shot their immune system can take much more than they give her. My ped only does 2 at most at a time. Its more about what you are comfortable with.

Re: Another Immunization Question...
Mine got 4 shots too. Once at the 2 month check-up and the second time was at 4 months. I always feel really bad for them.

Re: Another Immunization Question...
There is speculation that there is a link between autism & immunizations. One major reason is that autism is generally diagnosed at the age when you would get the immunizations(I think it's the MMR??) Research on both sides of the argument are strong.
I didn't get the MMR or DTAP shots broken up because insurance would not cover them - and it would've costs thousands of dollars. In the end, I've opted for never giving them immunizations if they were sick or just getting over something even if they have a cold. If there are multiple shots, I would delay them. The MMR is given as one shot.

Re: Another Immunization Question...
Getting 4 shots at once isn't a link to autism, its just an overload for thier little system, but its nothing they can't handle, so please don't worry, she'll be fine. My pedi never does more than 2 shots at any visit.
The link to autism, and its never really been fully established, was a theory that it was linked the the MMR shot they get anywhere from 15-18 months. Andrew got his at 18 months. Some delay it until they are 2 years old. Personally, I was fine with him getting it on the pedi's schedule for his shots because the thimerisol (mercury-based) preservative that it used to have in it is no longer used.

Re: Another Immunization Question...
My baby was given 4 shots his first time. I did not know any better, now thinking back I would not do that. We have changed doctors since then. The doctor was shocked that he received 4 at once esp. the first set.
He was fine though...don't worry. Just tell them if you feel uncomfortable with it.

Re: Another Immunization Question...
my doc will only give 2 at a time. She feels it's too much on their little bodies. Plus it is hard to differentiate a reaction to one of the shots, it's easier to r/o 1 or the other if you give 2, if you give 4 it is a more difficult to find the culprit of the reaction.

Re: Another Immunization Question...
only the MMR vaccine has ever been a "theory" link with Austism. It has been disproven many, many times, but there are people who feel that ALL studies on both sides are very flawed. it had nothing do with any other shot.
Molly has gotten 2 at once, but never more. That is just so that if there is a reaction the doctor can figure out which one caused the problem.

I feel so bad now. Just when I thought I read everything about babies, I find out about this. At least she seems to be feeling a bit better this afternoon.

Re: Another Immunization Question...
Andrea, don't feel bad at all. The pediatrician wouldn't do it if it wasn't safe for your child. Be glad that your baby has gotten them over with all at once!

Re: Another Immunization Question...
some doctors even give 5 shots at a time!. my doctor will only give my children 2 at a time. and i like that alot better. but autism is not from too many shots at once. i believe the link to autism and shots is the mmr shot.

Re: Another Immunization Question...
We broke up Frankie's shots, not because of Autism, but not avoid over loading his immune system. 4 shots at once is a whole lot for a baby to really get. My SIL is a NICU Nurse and she agrees. So our doctor allowed us to give only 2 shots each month, until he has the whole series of them.
Autism was said to be caused by the preservative (tymerasol (sp?)) found in the shots. But I believe most places now use SINGLE Dose Vials, so they no longer need a preservative. You should check with your doctor what they use in their office?

Yes, thimerasol is a perservsative used in most shots and most commonly in the flu shot, you can ask for the shot without this added pperservative, but they are hard to come by. IMO, I think we are just more aware of autism and kids are diagnosed mor readily than they were 20 years ago, 20 years ago they were labled "slow" or learning disabled, these were mild cases, but I do know that I have a few friends who are special ed teachers and they have the MMR broken down into 3 shots because they feel the link is strong.
