Anatomy Scan Question

So I heard that they can tell you the sex at 20 weeks, but when I went in for my 12 week sono, the Dr told me to come back around 16 weeks for the Anatomy Scan. Now Im just curious did anyone have 1 sono at 16 weeks and another at 20? Are there 2 Anatomy scans? I have heard that as well, there are 2 anatomy scans in the 2nd trimester... Is that true? Anyone else have 2? Will they be able to tell me the sex? Ill be exactly 16 weeks 5 days when I have the sono.

Ive heard numerous things and its all confusing! And Im not seeing my dr before the sono appt and I dont feel like calling her to bother her with this since its not an emergency... Its just my curosity and excitement...

Re: Anatomy Scan Question

I had a 12 week NT scan and then at 16 weeks it was the 2nd part which was bloodwork only. I ended up receiving a sono because I had switched Dr's but I wouldn't have had another sono until 20 weeks if I stayed with the same practice. I have heard conflicting things so I think every practice is different.

Re: Anatomy Scan Question

Yes I had an early anatomy scan (also at 16w5d) and another when I was 21 weeks. A lot of offices don't have two but that is the practice with mine for some reason. I was able to find out the sex at the early anatomy scan and it was confirmed at the second one. HTH!

Re: Anatomy Scan Question

I had a sono at 16 weeks with both of my pregnancies but its not the norm. Your anatomy scan is usually around the 20 week mark. But with both pregnancies the sex was confirmed at my 16 week sonos then again at my 20 week and again at my growth sonoChat Icon

Re: Anatomy Scan Question

I had an early anatomy scan at 16 weeks because of some issues they were looking for based on an increased nuchal thickness found at my 12 week sono. It is not norm in my OB's practice.

I did also have one again at 20 weeks. It was explained to me that while the 16 weeks one can look for specific things, there are certain areas of the heart and brain that aren't fully developed enough to be able to get a good look.

Re: Anatomy Scan Question

I had mine at 18 weeks. I think they generally do them between 18-22 weeks unless they feel the need or maybe that's when the tech is available. I had to go back 2 times because they weren't able to get heart measurements. The last time I went back they just did a growth US since I was about 24 weeks at that point.

Re: Anatomy Scan Question

I just had an early anatomy scan today at 17 weeks. My doctor doesn't automatically do them, but I asked about a 16-week sono, and she said I could go for one, but it was optional. I decided it was well worth the copay to see my LO again! I get to go again in 3 weeks for my 20 week. Chat Icon

Re: Anatomy Scan Question

I had an anatomy scan at 16wks to make sure the limbs are growing at the right "rate" and to check the ventricles in the brain. We found the sex with both pregnancies at the 16wk sono. The 20 was to get a measurement of all parts (including fingers, toes and bridge of the nose).

Re: Anatomy Scan Question

I had my anatomy scan at 19 wks and found out the sex of the baby...they had me come back in 4 weeks for another scan but thats only because they werent able to get a good shot of the baby's head at the first one. I would guess they would be able to tell you the sex at 16wks though it might not be 100% accurate.
