Amount of tiling in bathroom?

How much tile do you like in the bathroom? I usually lean toward just having it in the shower area, and have paint on the rest of the walls. It gives you the most options, and it's easier to change/update the look of the room by just painting, and not having to touch the tile.

Re: Amount of tiling in bathroom?

honestly I love how it looks on half the wall & the paint on the top half. I am not really a fan of tile in the shower (maybe bc I have it & I feel it is HIGH maintenance).

We have 2 bathrooms that are completely tile & I find myself getting tired of them rather quickly & you are limited with your options (bathrooms are only 4 years old). Our 1/2 of bath has tile on the bottom portion of the walls & I LOVE it.

Curious -- what else would you put in your shower if it wasn't tile?

For me, they are MUCH easier to maintain...You get them at Lowe's or Home Depot for less then $300

See, for me, I prefer tile in the shower - I don't like showering in that white plastic. Feels weird to me. The shower in our bathroom now is not that white plastic, but it's not tile either, so it doesn't weird me out. But I'm weird like that. Chat Icon

Overall, I like tile in the shower and on the bottom half of a wall with the top half of the wall painted.

silestone solid surface also makes one-piece shower surrounds. so its solid surface, not plastic... this is what we're looking into when we redo out upstairs bathroom.

we jsut redid our second bathroom- its really small and we did tile in the shower, and halfway up the walls. it looks really nice, but the tile was all DH... i don't usually like it on the walls because it makes it harder to just do a quick update to the room later on down the line.

We used tile (travertine) in the shower (ceiling included) and half way up the wall. We love it, granted it's new to us so I may be singing a different tune in a few years, but I sure as hell hope not. Chat Icon

I should also add that think it depends on what kind of tile you are using.

Re: Amount of tiling in bathroom?

We have the entire bathroom (main bathroom) tiles all the way up tp the ceiling. I love the way it looks and am really grossed out by decorations getting steamy (I am so scared of mold) so this works for meChat Icon

Re: Amount of tiling in bathroom?

Tile in the shower and on the floor is enough for me. In our coop we have tile half way up all of the walls plus a tile shower and I hate it!! It's like that because the building is old and has leaks so the tile covers what I presume is water damage in the walls.

I have often thought over the last 10 years of living here of taking the tile down. But around that time there is always a leak that reminds me that I'd have to redo drywall at least every two years.

You would think they would just upgrade the pipes but that would be too expensive and the shareholders balk at the slightest increase in carrying charges.

we tiled everything , BUT we have a small bathroom. if it were larger I would do the shower area, and maybe half the wall, then paint the top half.

We did full tile in the shower and 1/2 for the rest of the walls.

Re: Amount of tiling in bathroom?

We are in the process of redoing our second bathroom in a year. Our first bathroom we made a 3/4ths bath and we ended up tiling half way up the wall and the entire shower. I loved it but I think it was because it was such a hard choice trying to determine what paint color that I was turned off by it. When we began the shopping process for our main bath we decided to fully tile the bathroom and I can't wait. I won't have to paint a thing except the ceiling. When we were shopping the tile guy told us that people are even tiling their ceilings. I think that is a little much and woudl probably only do that if I was getting those tiles from kohler that are additional shower heads.
