am i nuts? updated on top

i think i am for even considering this. ok so DH is from ireland and all his family (parents, brother, cousins etc) is there. there is a family wedding in september that he had planned to go to alone. i was fine with that because we have two DDs, one is 3 and one is 13 months. but now his parents are urging us to all come. we haven't been there in over a year, when we had only one DD. its a 6 hour plane ride (7 hour return trip) plus a three hour drive from the airport to their village. we would have a place to stay that would be our own. it would not be cheap, as flights are around 800 each. obviously, the pros are that we would be able to spend time with family, have them meet our newest DD and see our four nieces, plus attend a family wedding. cons would be the travel, the cost and just the general stress of packing, dealing with sleeping arrangements for the girls and living out of a suitcase for 10 days. so am i nuts for considering this? part of me wants to go and not be so neurotic, but part of me remembers how stressed out i was last time doing it and that was only with one DD.

**i ultimately decided not to go with DH. you guys were all so encouraging, but i really just think it would be best to wait to travel when my girls are 4 and 2. plus if i went, my DD1 would miss her first days of pre school, and i really don't want her to start at any kind of disadvantage. thanks for all the responses**

am i nuts?

If you can handle it financially, I would definitely go! It would be a great experience for your girls and the whole family!

Re: am i nuts?

I dont think you're nuts for doing it. Im taking my twins on 2 trips this summer to visit family. It was stressful on the plane but I learned some things to do better the next time. It was totally worth the stress for them to have that experience of being in a new place and visiting friends and family.
However, I totally would understand why you'd decide not to do it.

Exactly! My friend just came back from there with her 2 year old and they had a great time. If I had the money to do it, I think it would totally be worth it!

Re: am i nuts?

I asked myself the same question - We are going to Italy for a family wedding at the end of the summer with my 1 year old.

I say go for it. What's the worst that can happen (at least that's what I'm telling myself!)

Re: am i nuts?

My friend and her husband take their two girls, 3 and 2, every year to Ireland. They love it. They've had to visit the dr while there too, and they said the care is top notch.

Re: am i nuts?

I have a lot of family there too. We went when my DD was 15 months and it was definitely not the easiest. I'm preg with #2 so I know it's going to be something we'll be doing throughout our/their lives. It's so nice that my kids will get to visit my cousin's kids and I love that. It's just the flying and packing and mania associated with it that is not fun but really I think it's worth every second when you get there. I say go for it.

P.S. I totally packed incorrectly last time we went (we also always go to Portugal since my DH's family is there) so I had lots of summer stuff and had to layer randomly for Ireland. LOL. It was so stressful but again you work it out. Chat Icon

If you can afford it financially go. You don't know when the next time you will have the chance to go.

Re: am i nuts?

If you can afford it - definitely go. We just came back with our 3 boys (5,4. and 10 months) They had such a great time. This was my older ds's 4th trip there.

Yes there is a lot to pack but all vacations are work when you have kids. Good Luck

Re: am i nuts? updated on top

I was in the same position 6 yeas ago but it was a different country. DH was the best man and I had a 2.5 year old and 13 month old. I was gong back and forth and I was scared to travel with the kids so we stayed back and he went alone for 2 weeks. The wedding was for my side of the family.

Fast forward 6 years…we added 2 dogs and another child to the mix and we still haven't gone back. My kids are now 3.5, 7, 8 and I regret not going then. It would have been a lot easier than I think and adding another child ticket gets very expensive.
