am i being morbid?
i am 24 weeks today i have always looked forward to this point in my pregnancy, because from what i have read and heard, at this point, the baby is most likely viable outside the womb if, god forbid, i were to go into labor early.
my mother and DH totally get this and are as happy as i am. i see it as being a very happy day and important milestone. however SEVERAL people have said to me that this is a morbid thought and i shouldn't even let it cross my mind.
my reasoning is, although it might be hard to think about, this milestone does, in fact, make me feel better and more relaxed about my pregnancy.
am i being morbid? or are other people just being too sensitive??

You are not being morbid. You love your baby and want him to be healthy. I looked forward to every Monday when I started a new week! Each week your baby is that much stronger! Enjoy week 24!!

Re: am i being morbid?
Its funny you post this because I said the same exact thing! It makes me feel better knowing just in case. My mom was like but you WOULDN'T want the baby to be born now, and of course that is true but its reassuring to know just in case..

I don't think you are being morbid, but realistic. If it helps you feel confident in the pregnancy, it is a good thing.
There will always be people who won't see where you are coming from until they go through it themselves.
Here's to a very heathy baby!

Re: am i being morbid?
You're not MORBID AT ALL!!!! I consciously acknowledged the viability milestone last week at 24wks, its important, and shows that you're very well-informed about baby's development!!! And of course 'viability' simply means baby could survive (with about a 70% certainty) - its certainly not something anyone would WISH for!!!
Interestingly I'll hit 25 weeks on Friday, and the survival rate for babies born that week JUMPS to 80-90%. AMAZING!!
Of course that stat doesn't incorporate the possible lifelong complications a baby born so early might face, but yes, there is a psychological sigh of relief with each week that passes!!!
So, in a nutshell, don't listen to 'em!!!!

oh i am so glad i am not the only one!!
colette those stats are interesting - where did you get them from?
seriously, its so comforting to me to know that even though i would LOVE to go the full 40 weeks, if for some reason i can't, with every week that passes, my baby has a better chance of survival

Re: am i being morbid?
Not morbid at all I TOTALLY agree with you and I also took a sigh of relief to be 24 weeks.
Now ... heaven forbid... if something happens they can save BOTH of us.. not just automatically discard the fetus. If there's a chance to save us both, we both can survive, 4 weeks ago, that wasn't true.
Its reality. Its a huge milestone

Re: am i being morbid?
I don't think it is morbid at all. As happy and as excited as I am, I'm pretty much nervous all the time. I think that is simply reality, especially when you hear so many sad stories. I am happy each day I reach a new week, and this week I hit 12 weeks and was thrilled. I was looking at a pregnancy calendar once and it gave a date that the baby would likely survive if born then, and I immediately thought "I can't wait until that day. Then maybe I can relax a little!" Congrats on reaching it!!

Not morbid at all! I totally agree with you and cant wait to reach that milestone myself. It is just a little more peace of mind, one more breath of relief you can take, IMO. Congrats

You are not being morbid. I felt relief when I made it past the first trimester and then another sigh of relief when I reached 24 weeks.
I'm sure everything will be fine with you and the baby.

I subscribe to a GREAT PODCAST on iTunes!!! It's called "Pea in the Podcast" and they have 40 weekly episodes you can download. I listen to one every Friday for the week I'm heading into, they all run between 5-10 minutes, and the expert is a female OB/GYN with 20+ years experience, she's very down to earth and credible. Just go to iTunes/Podcasts to subscribe!!!

I don't think your being morbid at all. I am sure this is a thought that crosses many expecting mom's, me being one of them. This is reality and you are just being realistic, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Not morbid.
With every milestone I reach, I am filled with relief as well as fright. After the firt trimester in which most people feel "WHEW," I felt "OMG I am scared for X, Y, and Z test."
I think it is normal and natural. I don't think we will ever stop worrying.

I recently went to my doctor (regular doc) for a sinus infection & she told me the same thing about the 24 week mark. I actually didn't know this! Every week here on the survival rate outside the womb gets stronger & stronger.
Your not being morbid at all!!!!!!!!!!

Re: am i being morbid?
Totally not morbid at all !! As a matter of fact I think most woman think about it .
And when the baby is born you will constantly go in and check on her/him to make sure their breathing with each step up theres always another milestone . I believe its a natural feeling and its called a mothers instinct.
So dont feel morbid at all !!
