Am I being a jerk?
There are two "wellness rooms" at work where I can pump (neither on my floor). I work at a very large office. They have large chairs, a table with a phone, a mini fridge and a paper towel dispenser/hand sanitizer in each room. It is actually a pretty nice set up and makes things easier. There are several employees that use that room to pray. They usually take 5-10 minutes but the timing is totally random and I feel bad leaving to pump as it is, worse when I have to wait and it takes longer. Am I being an intolerant jerk for getting annoyed? I would never say anything but I think - can't you use an empty conference room? I feel like a bit of a hypocrite - because I would totally spout religious tolerance but when it comes down to practicality - I totally don't practice what I preach.

I think you shouldn't say anything. You're doing your thing, they're doing theirs.

I would ask HR if the room can be scheduled.

HR set up a schedule so everyone has the ability to use the room at a designated time.

Re: Am I being a jerk?
I would also ask for a schedule to be put up that way there's no overlap. BTW totally jealous of your pumping room, mine was a tiny hot office with people knocking to get in once in a while

Re: Am I being a jerk?
There are supposed to be rooms for pumping. If they are being used for other things, you need to go to HR. These are not break rooms. It is hard enough getting away from your desk to pump, to have to wait on top of it is unfair.

They do not have to be dedicated to pumping. We have something similar to what the poster described. I would just ask for a schedule.

Your wellness room sounds a lot like mine. I feel like we may work for the same company lol. I stopped pumping in September so I am no longer dealing with this issue but it was certainly frustrating. Like previous posters suggested, I asked our admin about coordinating a schedule for those rooms but they wouldn't do it for various reasons. It was set up as first come first serve basis. In my case I was lucky enough to have 2 of these rooms, so if someone was in one on one floor I'd just go to the other and for the most part that one would be empty. If it wasn't I would go back and knock and tell them that I needed the room. They were pretty respectful about it. Only a handful of times did I go back to my desk and try again in a few minutes. I know my advice isn't exactly helpful but just sharing what worked for me. I did it for 7 months.

Re: Am I being a jerk?
I agree with the others. I'm sure HR would be willing to set up a schedule...it would keep you more productive since you wouldn't have to wait to use the room! It just gets set up like any other conference room that you'd book for a meeting. Except you're booking for pumping. Same idea and easy to do. Talk to HR and make this suggestion.
