Allow me a moment to brag...
DS is considered special needs with a definate developmental delay and even a diagnosis of PDD (which all of his therapists don't believe).
I know most of your 2 year olds already do these things but for him it is very special to me because it has taken hours and hours of steadfast hard work and therapy for it to finally click.
In the last month we've learned that he knows his abc's (not just the song but can also identify about half of them by sight). He knows how to count from 1 to 10 clearly and even 15 with verbal prompts. He knows all of his colors. All of his animal sounds. All of his shapes. And countless amount of words at this point (some very articulate and over a hundred of approximations that are very close).
I'm just amazed and blown away. We spent so long working with him on this stuff (not just his therapists but DH and I too). He used to just look at us with no verbal inclination at all that he knew any of it or that he even was interested. Then is started to open up a little. And now he just lets it all out and I know there is still more to come.
I look back and now realize that it wasn't all for naught. He was picking up on it all along. He just didn't know how to (or didn't have a desire to) verbalize it. Anyway, I'm so proud of where we are with him at this point. I just know in my heart that if we continue this that we will have made a large dent in his delay and practically make it go away...and the doctors and therapists have assured me that will most likely be the case. Still a long road ahead of us but I just needed to stop and reflect for a minute.
Thanks for listening.

You know how happy I am to hear this! You will be amazed at what the next few months bring, trust me. You look at your baby who only a few months ago had a few words and now look at home!

Oh Lisa, if you could see me in person right now you would see that I really am jumping up and down for you! And Matthew of course!
That is just awesome! I will tell you that Matthew is doing things that Lucas is not doing! So look at that... he is growing in leaps and bounds... and all I can say to that is "WHAT delay?"

That is so nice to hear, God Work!!!
I wanted to help you feel even better, DD is 2 and doing almost the same things, but not recognizing nearly as many letters and has tested to be advanced in many ways. It sounds like your hard work has REALLY paid off.

Re: Allow me a moment to brag...
I guess I should bring the post down to earth for a second....the only reason he knows this stuff is because I was a neurotic mother who feared that he was so far behind that for the last few months pretty much all play and interaction was focused around learning (bath time, eating, books, games, dvds, flashcards, in the car, while we shop). Matthew never seemed to mind because I genuinely think he likes learning and LOVES the validation, cheers, and tickles that he gets from us when he learns something new. It kind of kept him motivated and kept us going. Plus he is in daycare full time AND has 12 hours of therapy a week plus we get parent training too.
I was told by his therapist that shapes is a 3 year old skill and letters is a 4 year old skill.
He still has delays. His delays originally revolved around communication, not just verbal but also gesturing (pointing for example). There are also the social ones too (peer interaction for example).
Communication is still delayed. He is only starting two word combinations and they are minimal and so obviously doesn't use sentences. The formation of words is difficult. They were thinking a mild apraxia at first but now it does appear that him being tongue tied for 6 months may be playing a role because his tongue movement is very minimal yet the lips have been doing some work lately.
Socially, for those who know my son can attest to the fact that a few months ago he wanted nothing to do with kids. He is shadowed for an hour a day at daycare to prompt social awareness which seems to be effective. I've even got him to hug his classmates goodbye each night sometimes. I've been told that he has become so much more involved with the other children, especially in a structured activity. He still prefers to play parallel when there is "free play" which is still acceptable for a 2 year old but they're trying to faciliate the changeover to join in with others in the event that he doesn't naturally progress on his own.
He does also continue to be very tempermental (which those who know him can also attest to -- lol) but even that is getting a tiny bit better now that he can communicate a little more. We still have many many many "moments" of defiance, yelling, 2 year old stuff magnified.
