allergy to tomato/ketchup?
anyone's child have an allergy to tomato?
for a few months, i've noticed that my son keeps getting this rash on his face and I just thought it was drool/paci/cool weather related but this afternoon after eating pasta with sauce for lunch, his face started to break out.
with dinner, he had some chicken nuggets with ketchup (his newest obsession) and his face looked AWFUL. a red, raised, blotchy rash all over
i guess I should take him to see an allergist? he is only 19 months if he is allergic to tomatoes, his italian grandparents and great grandparents may be heart broken

My mom's friend is. I would bring him to an allergist.

Re: allergy to tomato/ketchup?
Not sure but it could be. Tomatoes are very acidic so it can possibly be.
Dd is almost 19 months as well and has been getting a rash on and off all over her body. Can't figure out what it is.

DD got this - both her ped and her allergist said it sometimes isn't an allergy but a sensitivity/reaction to the acidity in it. If you are concerned you could always get your DC tested.

did it happen with anything else? i have a feeling that it is the acidity because I know looking back that other things have triggered it too... likely acidic foods.

Re: allergy to tomato/ketchup?
DS has this with tomatoes and some sauces. I just watch how many he eats or avoid - it happens more with raw tomatoes. If he has too many, or depending on a sauce right away, he gets the red rash you're talking about. I just give him a lot of water to drink and benedryl if needed.
Interestingly, I developed a tomato sensitivity during my pregnancy with him too - who knows?

Re: allergy to tomato/ketchup?
I have actually been told by my allergist that some of the fruits and veggies have pollens on them and THAT is what causes the reaction. My son also breaks out around his mouth from citrus fruits and tomatoes. He is not food allergic but does have environmental allergies.

Well it happens with some brands of tomato sauce, even canned tomatoes (even organic) or pizza we would get out. She doesn't eat a lot of tomato sauce -she is okay with fresh tomatoes (but they don't sit on her face like sauce or liquid would) but gets it the few times we have sauce. Since she has such a minor reaction and doesn't always get it DD#1's allergist told me to hold off testing DD#2 since she doesn't get it all the time and it sounded like more of an acidic thing than an allergy. We are going to test her for a couple of things when she turns 3 (they say the testing is more reliable at 3).

Re: allergy to tomato/ketchup?
We recently had my daughter allergy tested and she is allergic to a LOT of foods and tomatoes are one of them!
I would mention it to your pediatrican and see if he or she wants you to get bloodwork or an allergy panel done!

Re: allergy to tomato/ketchup?
I'm not sure if its the same thing, but my DD has a contact allergy to tomatoes...when they touch her skin, she immediately breaks out in a rash. The same thing happens with dairy products (butter, cheese). The dermatologist told us to lotion her up before eating them so that they can't get as close to the skin.

Re: allergy to tomato/ketchup?
DS (16 months) gets it every time he eats sauce - but it always goes away within like 20 mins of being done eating so I just attribute it to the acidity. My best friends son gets it too.
