Allergy to rice cereal?

Is this even possible? I started DD on rice cereal on Saturday. On Sunday morning I noticed a little patch of ecxema near her cheek. It has gotten a little bigger but not spread really. I just thought it was a dry patch so I gave her 3 days worth of rice cereal, then we moved to oatmeal. It didn't go away so I went to the dr who said it's excema. But have you ever heard of a baby being allergic or breaking out from rice cereal? I thought it was the most non-allergic food.

My DD has had that ever since we started Barley, but ped said it wasn't from that (didn't seem allergic to it) but it was dry skin. I've been putting Aquafor on her face for a month now...starts out ok in the morning, but by nighttime it gets pretty bad. Not sure what to do. I really don't know if it is the cereal or not. Could she be teething? Steven gets rashes on his cheek from the drool. Some days it's wors than others. And, as the AP said sometimes it starts out fine in the morning but as the day goes on, it gets worse.

I noticed the same thing on DD today - we started Sweet Potates this week, but I really think its teething. All the drool seems to go to that one cheek, esp when she's on her tummy. I noticed that's the side she lays her face on.

I don't think it's from teething. She usually has a small red rash under her chin from the drool - but this looks different. I think I'll stick with oatmeal for a few days and not go back to rice for a while. Just seems odd but I guess it could happen.

Re: Allergy to rice cereal?

You can def. be allergic to rice - you can be allergic to almost anything unfortunately.

When my dd had excema early on our ped suggested holding off on all cereals because that can make skin issues worse for some reason. So I didn't start Em on anything until she was 5.5 mths old.

Maybe just hold back a little on the cereal or just stick with the oatmeal for now?

A lot of babies are allergic. They normally say to go right to oatmeal if that happens. Ask you ped.

We waited until she was 6 months to start cereal to try to lessen allergies. Now we're on oatmeal - would you move on to barley? She doesn't seem to have had any reactions to the oatmeal.

I didn't realize she was 6 mths already! How time fliesChat Icon

We didn't try barley at all for some reason....I'd ask the ped - but maybe for now, sticking with the oatmeal is fine IMO.

Since you know alot about this Teri, do you see any reason to NOT start fruit?

no, I think fruit should be okay. We didn't delay any fruits - there are SOME kids can be allergic to that I know of - kiwi, strawberry, etc but not the ones you'd typically start them off on like banana, etc. Just to be safe I'd start each one slowly and see if anything happens, but don't worry, I'm sure she'll be fineChat Icon
