Allergy medicine during pregnancy?
Hi everyone,
Prior to pregnancy I took Allegra daily for my year-round indoor & outdoor allergies. I also have allergy induced asthma.
I was able to get through my 1st trimester without taking any allergy medicine, but had 2 mild asthma attacks. My OB told me it was safe to take Allegra during pregnancy - safer than having asthma symptoms, which also affect the baby's breathing.
Are any of you talking allergy medicine? If so, which one? How often? What did your doctor recommend?
I would like to take nothing, but it's not an option right now.
Thanks in advance!!!
Baby Girl due April 13, 2010 (as of today I am week 13)

Re: Allergy medicine during pregnancy?
I've was occasionally taking zyrtec my first 10 weeks and than the last 2 weeks I've been taking it much more often because my allergies have been bad. If I don't take something, my allergies will make me sick- cold or sore throat, so I really need to control them. Both my allergist and OB said it was fine to take zyrtec.
But nothing with D at that end- that's not ok for pregnant women.

Re: Allergy medicine during pregnancy?
From my understanding both Claritin and Zyrtec are category B drugs while allegra is a category C.
In my opinion, if claritin for zyrtec work for you, I would much rather take a category B drug. I would consult with your doctor. If they don't work for you, then you might decide the risk of allegra is less than the harm of asthma/allergies.

Re: Allergy medicine during pregnancy?
Thanks so much ladies!
I would much rather be taking Claritin or Zyrtek since they are "B".
I will talk to doc about it Tuesday at my appointment.

I was told this by the OB about zyrtec with DD in pregnancy #1 however my insur wouldn't cover zyrtec so you may not have a choice but if you do obviously go with the safest option. I take my allergy medicine everyday, it's loratidine which is generic claritin and flonase as well.

Zyrtec is sold over the counter- you don't need a prescription.

Re: Allergy medicine during pregnancy?
Thanks so much for your replies everyone!
I bought Claritin and it's working perfectly.
DH is great, vacuuming the mattress weekly and changing the linens 2x a week!
We have a Dyson Animal vac, which really helps all over the house with pet hair and dust.
I'm also sleeping with a humidifier.
Those are my other tips, ladies :)
Oh and a neti pot!
