Alcohol at birthday parties

What is everyone's opinion about having alcohol at a child's birthday party? I prefer not to have it, but is that bad?

Not bad but you need to know your crowd. I wouldnt invite my dads cousins who clearly drink to no end and have a tub of beer readily and available. However, if dd's b-day was in the summertime in my backyard and we had a few drinks back there...I wouldnt see the big deal. But like I said....know your guests.

we will be having beer and wine at Ella's 1st brithday party. I like to make sure if the adults want to have a few it is available. Plus after running around all day setting up and getting everything ready I like to have a few and relaxChat Icon

Re: Alcohol at birthday parties

we are having a lot of people in the 30-50 age group who drink.

So we are going to have beers and some like Hard lemonades etc.

It's absolutely your choice!

For me, we always have alcohol at our parties. But our parties are always around 200 people attending, so we go all out.

We do the same but we have a fraction of that amount of people.

the place we are having DS 1st birthday will be serving wine, but thats it. If someone wants a beer or another drink they can get it from the bar. However its only family, if we were having our friends we would have def had beer for them.

Re: Alcohol at birthday parties

I think it depends on if there will be a lot more adults than children. I would provide at least beer. But it's totally up to you.

Re: Alcohol at birthday parties

There will be alcohol at DS's 1st bday

I guess it is up to the individual parents if they chose to get sloshed...i trust they will use good judgment and not drive drunk

Re: Alcohol at birthday parties

We usually do have drinks at our parties, but I don't like when adults drink with children. I know some people that would be coming go overboard and get drunk and I don't want that. If I knew people would have a few I wouldn't mind so much, but I don't think anyone should get drunk at a child's birthday party, unless it's an all day thing and at night the adults are just hanging out. I guess I'll just talk it over with DH, but thank you for everyone's opinion.

Re: Alcohol at birthday parties

I also think it depends on how many people.

If it were 20-30 I might say no alcohol....But we are having over 75 people so we choose to.

Re: Alcohol at birthday parties

We are having an open bar. I know the guests we are having will not drink to get drunk. They may have one or two drinks but thats it. I don't know who drinks what, so having an open bar works for us.

Re: Alcohol at birthday parties

For DS's first Birthday, Beer and Wine were included with the price (we had it at an Italian Restaurant). Drinks were priced on consumption as we didn't think too many people would be having hard liquor during the day. Little did we know DS's aunt, uncle and cousins would be doing shots of Patron Chat Icon Chat Icon
When we got the bill, we figured it was our alcy friends. Once we got the pictures, we just about fell off our seats laughing when we saw who it was Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Alcohol at birthday parties

We are having it at a hall so I know the staff will control the crowd, so to speak. If I were having it at home I might not go beyond wine.

Re: Alcohol at birthday parties

I would not expect it if attending a party. When the time comes, if we have a lot of our friends, we will probably offer some alcohol of our choosing.

Re: Alcohol at birthday parties

Well even though DD is only 6 months old we've begun to talk about her 1st b-day party. We're going to do a fiesta theme-it's an inside joke with my mom's side of the family and we plan on having drinks because I know my family and her b-day is going to be a HUGE celebration.

What it really boils down to is your own personal feelings.
