Alaska or Hawaii

DH hits the big 50 later this year. I want to do something special beyond a party, and I want it to be a surprise gift.

He has been to Hawaii and LOVES it, and always talks about going back. I have never been.

He talks about taking a cruise to Alaska as often as he talks about Hawaii. He randomly checks out the prices of such a cruise. I took a cruise in 2004 and loved it. I wouldn't mind going back, and could choose different ports so it would be "new" to me as well.

He said something a few weeks ago which allowed me to ask which he would prefer without it raising any red flags. He said Chat Icon if we were going without DD he would pick Hawaii, (romance) but with her he would go to Alaska. So, in terms of real help to decide he gave me NONE. I say this because he just planned a trip for our wedding anniversary to DISNEY of all places! (last time we took a trip for our wedding anniversary we went to St. Kitts and left DD with MIL).

Preliminary research indicates that the costs of the trips are relatively the same since Disney added a resort in Hawaii and we could actually bring DD with us.

The major difference is we could actually go to Hawaii for his birthday (it's in December), but not Alaska, as that would have to wait until 6 months after his actual birthday. The other signficant difference is that DD shares her b-day with DH, so it could mean no party for her. I say could because I have been planning a joint party for the two of them for this year FOREVER, but I'm thinking I would rather spend the money I've saved on a vacation.

I can't decide which way to go - Alaska in June/July 2013 or Hawaii in December 2012.

Re: Alaska or Hawaii

Im voting Hawaii 2012 because 1 - you can go for his actual birthday and IMO thats much more fun and 2 - the romance option.

Even if you bring DD I would still do Hawaii. I've been and love it there.

wow! I feel like they are so different. Both trips would be amazing. Maybe price them both out and go with the better deal.

Re: Alaska or Hawaii

I have never been to Alaska, but of all the places in the world I've been , Hawaii ranks in my top 3, and I would go every year if I could. I would go there since you could go for both DH and DD's bdays! I'd take a trip to Hawaii over a bday party anyday!!

This is part of the problem. They are different. He has gone to Hawaii, but not Alaska. I've been to Alaska, but not Hawaii. He constantly brings both trips up in conversation, and truly wants to do both.

The romance will be out the window with a 5 year old in tow.

I went to Alaska with DH and we both loved it. I actually miss it and I didn't think I would like it. I don't really have a desire to go to Hawaii though. So I would pick Alaska!

Re: Alaska or Hawaii

We went to Hawaii last year with our 2 year old and it was great with him.

Had been once before and really it's a place I could go to over and over and probably live in.

If you can go this year, I say go for it!

I've been both places. It really depends on what you want from a vacation. Alaska is gorgeous but quite frankly after a 7 day cruise I felt like I had seen it.

DH and I have been to Hawaii 4 times each - and we're plotting our next trip now! In the past 5 years we've spent almost 2 months there total and never get bored.

Both sound amazing, I don't think you can lose! If I had to pick I guess I'd go with Hawaii.

Since it's a gift for his birthday I would probably do Alaska since he's never been there.

Re: Alaska or Hawaii

It sounds like he wants to do to Hawaii more and I was going to suggest Aulani (Disney's resort on Oahu) because they have LOTS of activities for kids, so there will be something for everyone and you can have some alone time with DH. I think it would be a lot of fun.

For Alaska, I'd think of a Disney Cruise. Same thing. Activities for everyone, and lots of opportunities to be alone with DH while DD is at kids clubs.

We're planning an Aulani trip for February and I do know a lot about it, so let me know if you have any questions. Same with Disney Cruises. I'm so in love with Disney Cruise Line.

I kind of thought that, but when he prices out vacations, he always prices out the Alaskan cruise.

I wish I could just ask him and get a straight answer.

Re: Alaska or Hawaii

When is your next vacation? Is it possible you will do Hawaii for a big anniversary, so Alaska is a good family trip?

There are factors leaning it in both directions in my mind. Since it's his birthday, Alaska will be new to him. But Hawaii lets you be home for their actual birthdays.

The flight to Hawaii will probably be more. Flip a coin.

I think if you are doing a cruise, you should book it ASAP to get the best stateroom/rate. Similarly, Aulani would probably book up, especially if it's close to Christmas.

I would think of your long term travel plans. Thinking about both, which one will you have a better opportunity for in future years?

This is tough, but either trip would be amazing!!!

Our next vacation is in October - to Disney. Which makes me lean toward Alaska to space it out a bit. Also, since the October vacation is for our anniversary, the fact that he chose Disney makes me feel like he doesn't want a romantic vacation in Hawaii, but would at his point prefer a family vacation.

I'm so confused!! Chat Icon

so hard to decide, BUT Hawaii is the 50th state - so I would go with the 50 theme if you are really undecided!
